Modric weighs in on Real move for Liverpool target Mbappe

Luka Modric has responded to Real Madrid’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappe by saying ‘great players are always welcome’ at the club.

Los Blancos want to sign the French superstar to succeed from Karim Benzema up front.

They’re battling with Liverpool for the player’s signature as he nears a Paris Saint-Germain exit.

Modric was recently asked about the Mbappe transfer saga and whether he would like him at the Bernabeu.

The midfielder said (via Daily Mail): “You hear a lot of stories about the players who’ll be coming in and who’ll be leaving, but I can’t go into that.

“Mbappe is a great player and he’s proved that with his national team and PSG. Great players are always welcome at Real Madrid, but it wouldn’t be right of me to speak about players at other clubs, particularly at this stage of the season.

“We’ll have to see what happens next season, but he’s a top player and is amongst the best in the world.”

Modric could come up against Mbappe later in the season through the Champions League.

PSG have already reached the semi-finals by going through on away goals against Bayern Munich.

Real are in a strong position to qualify as they have a 3-1 lead over Liverpool going into the quarter-final second leg.

Modric, 35, is out of contract in June. He’s started negotiations with Real over an extension which could see him end his career in the Spanish capital.

When asked about the talks, Modric continued: “My renewal is going well.

“I have always said that I want to continue, that I feel very happy here and I hope to continue next year.”

The Croatian playmaker has won a host of trophies with Real since joining from Spurs in 2012.

He’s picked up four Champions League winners medals and two La Liga titles.

Signing Mbappe would give Real a brilliant chance of winning the Spanish league next season.

However, they will have to fend off interest from Liverpool for the World Cup winner.

Jurgen Klopp wants the forward to link up with Mo Salah at Anfield. The Reds also think their partnership with Nike and LeBron James could give them an edge in the race.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool man Jamie Carragher was slammed recently for suggesting that Mbappe should leave France for a bigger league.
