Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold ‘ruled out’ of Euro 2020

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss out on this summer’s European Championships as he suffered a “grade two quad tear” against Austria.

The right-back picked up the injury late into England‘s pre-tournament friendly at the Riverside Stadium against Austria on Wednesday night.

The injury came about in an innocuous fashion. There was no one around him as he pulled up shortly after clearing the ball. He was given assistance as he made his way towards the dugout.

Five England reasons to be cheerful after 1-0 win

After the 1-0 win over Austria, Gareth Southgate admitted that it was “not a good sign” seeing Alexander-Arnold walk off as he did:

“We’re going to have a look. It’s not good to see him come off in the way he did.

“We’ll have to assess him over the next 24 hours. I think thigh but the medical team are assessing him. We’ll have to see. It’s not a good sign to see him have to walk off as he did. We’ll know more in 24 to 48 hours.

“Let’s see how Trent is and then we’ll go from there.

“We don’t know the full extent. The last thing you want is to see him come off in the way he did.”

Southgate‘s worries were confirmed on Thursday evening. The Athletic have confirmed that the defender will not be able to make it to the Euros. Their report reads:

“Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of Euro 2020 and will depart England’s camp on Thursday night.

“A medical assessment earlier in the day revealed that the Liverpool defender, 22, had suffered a grade two quad tear during England’s 1-0 friendly win over Austria.

“The scan confirmed the devastated defender’s worst fears and he will now withdraw from England’s squad for the tournament. He faces a recovery period of between four to six weeks.”

They add that Alexander-Arnold will leave England’s training camp on Thursday evening to return home.

Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Ben Godfrey, Jesse Lingard, James Ward Prowse and Ollie Watkins dropped out of the squad on Tuesday night. Mason Greenwood also misses out through injury.

One of these six players will take Alexander-Arnold’s place in the 26-man squad.
