Liverpool told to sign Man Utd flop as Wijnaldum replacement

Man Utd midfielder Donny van de Beek would be “a wonderful replacement” for Georginio Wijnaldum at Liverpool, according to Ajax legend Sjaak Swart.

Van de Beek was signed by the Red Devils in September for an initial £35million but he has started just four Premier League games for the club in his debut season.

He’s largely been limited to substitute appearances and cup games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, contributing just one goal and one assist in 36 games.

The Dutch international may slip further down the pecking order should Man Utd move to sign another midfielder, with the likes of Saul Niguez linked with a move to Old Trafford.

But Swart, who won seven Eredivisie titles and three European Cups as a winger for Ajax, isn’t “worried” about Van de Beek.

“He played really great at Ajax, until he left. He was ready for abroad. But at United they have 8 or 9 midfielders, and you have to intervene, then it takes time,” Swart told Soccernews.nl.

“That is a choice [about his future] he has to make himself, whether he feels like he needs to leave. I am not worried about him.”

However, if he does want to leave Man Utd, Swart recommends that Liverpool or Bayern Munich would be a good fit for the 24-year-old.

Swart added: “He would fit right in with other clubs. If I look at Liverpool and [Georginio] Wijnaldum is leaving now, he will be a wonderful replacement. Or for Thomas Müller, at Bayern Munich.”

Meanwhile, Swart isn’t the only former Ajax player to discuss Van de Beek’s future, with Rafael van der Vaart claiming yesterday that a move to Borussia Dortmund would’ve been “a better step for him”.

“He fitted perfectly into the Ajax system, but he doesn’t fit at United,” Van der Vaart told ESPN.

“If you have the opportunity to go to a team that suits you better and it’s an attractive team, I would definitely go for that.

“If nobody leaves United, he will have to be lucky to get into the starting eleven. He is far too good to sit on the bench for two seasons.

“He needs minutes very quickly. He’s still young, but time flies. A club like Borussia Dortmund would have been a better step for him. Manchester United is perhaps a step too high for him.”
