Liverpool players ‘hate’ new £50m training ground at Kirkby

Liverpool players hate the club’s new training ground at Kirkby over how windy it is, according to a report.

The facility, which was opened back in November, includes three full-size pitches, two gyms, a full-size sports hall, pool and specialist sports rehabilitation suites.

The venue, which will bring the first and under-23 teams together, earned praise from Reds boss Jurgen Klopp at the time, who said: “It will improve the process, massively.

OPINION: Can Klopp mould ‘monster’ Phillips into a Liverpool regular?

“The relationship with the academy, it will be as close as ever and that’s really good.”

Liverpool managing director Andy Hughes also commented in November: “We started this project over two years ago, marking a significant milestone in the history of this great football club.

“After saying a fond farewell to Melwood last week, we are excited to be start a new era at the club, bringing our first team and academy operations and facilities together on one site for the first time in history.”

However, The Sun now claims that there is ‘one problem with the new HQ — the players hate it.’

The report adds: ‘They would rather be at the famous old Melwood site. There is nothing wrong with the facilities. It is just windy. Really windy.’

It is understood that ‘Sunday League players in Merseyside hate playing there’ in the area known as ‘Windy Harbour’.

Meanwhile, Klopp could’ve found the answer to his centre-back issues as Jamie Carragher described Nat Phillips as “a real monster” after their 1-0 victory over Wolves on Monday night.

Carragher said on Sky Sports: “He played a huge role in the game and he [Phillips] is a monster in the air.

“So when you talk about what Liverpool lack when other ones are playing, they get a great deal in terms of defending set-pieces and his ability in the air. He’s a real monster in that position.”

Ozan Kabak partnered Phillips in the centre of defence against Wolves and Klopp was really pleased with the pair’s display.

Klopp said: “They played really, really well and I liked it a lot. It was a massive task from a concentration point of view, but they did really well and I’m really happy.”
