What Liverpool star Fabinho told Madrid chief in tunnel chat

A chat between Liverpool star Fabinho and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez was caught in camera in the tunnel after Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madid on Tuesday.

The Brazilian was back on familiar territory in Madrid, playing against the club he represented back in 2013.

Liverpool were deservedly beaten after a sloppy display, with Vinicius Junior scoring twice to secure a commanding lead heading into the second leg at Anfield.

And after the game, the 20-year-old winger joined Fabinho in the tunnel for a private chat with Perez.

According to Marca, Perez spoke to the Liverpool midfielder about how much his game has changed since he left the Spanish capital.

“With us you played as a right-back,” Perez recalled

To which Fabinho allegedly responded: “Yes, but to play right-back now… What a player you have in Vinicius.”

Fabinho joined Real Madrid on loan from Rio Ave in 2012 but spent most of his time playing for the Castilla side, where he made over 30 appearances, before being handed his senior debut from the bench by Jose Mourinho in a 6-2 win over Malaga.

He later became a key figure for Monaco, where he continued as a right-back before making the move into his now customaary central midfield role.

Alberto Toril, his former coach at Real Madrid Castilla, recently admitted that Fabinho never quite looked like a midfielder.

“He was very shy, but you could immediately see his potential as a player,” Toril told Goal.

“When he arrived, he occupied a somewhat strange position for the type of footballer he was. He was 1.90m (6ft 2in), but he was a right-back, which is unusual, no?

“He played on occasion as a centre-back, but never as a midfielder. At the time he just wasn’t seen as a midfield player, although we were not sure where his best position would be in the future.”

Liverpool have a mountain to climb in the second leg at Anfield next week if they are to reach the Champions League semi-finals, with Rio Ferdinand claiming it’s already “game over” for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
