Liverpool ‘expect’ TAA to miss out on Euros in England squad update

Liverpool are expecting Trent Alexander-Arnold to miss out on Gareth Southgate’s England squad as journalist David Ornstein gives the latest on possible ins and outs.

Southgate will name his 26-man England squad for the European Championships on Tuesday with a number of high-profile players nervously waiting to see if they will make the squad.

Alexander-Arnold was surprisingly omitted from England’s squad for the recent World Cup qualifying victories against San Marino, Albania and Poland, with Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James the right-backs chosen.

Southgate’s decision has led to scrutiny about where Alexander-Arnold fits into the England boss’ plans ahead of Euro 2020.

The 22-year-old, who has 12 senior caps, has been in great form in April and May, assisting four goals for his team-mates and getting on the scoresheet in the process as Liverpool qualified for the Champions League.

But Ornstein in The Athletic claims that Liverpool ‘do not think Trent Alexander-Arnold will be included’ in the squad when it’s announced on Tuesday.

The report adds that ‘there has been no contact between the England camp and the club — although that could yet change in the next 24 hours — and the 22-year-old is expected to miss out.’

Meanwhile, Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope has been given a ‘slim’ chance of making the squad with the 29-year-old set to undergo knee surgery tomorrow.

And Ornstein says West Brom’s Sam Johnstone is ‘next in line’ if Pope were to miss out, joining Manchester United’s Dean Henderson and Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

At centre-back, Everton’s Ben Godfrey and Brighton’s Ben White and Lewis Dunk are understood to be ‘in the mix’ as defence gives Southgate a selection headache.

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips suffered a shoulder injury in their victory over West Brom on Sunday and ‘it is feared he has suffered a dislocation that would be devastating to his chances of participating in the tournament’.

And FA Cup winners Leicester City ‘are not confident that James Maddison will make the cut’ with the playmaker off the boil in the last couple of months, failing to assist or score since his goal against Aston Villa in February.
