Lingard to ‘miss out’ on England’s 26-man Euros squad

West Ham United loanee Jesse Lingard will “miss out” on a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the European Championships, according to reports.

Lingard’s brilliant end to the season with the Hammers dragged him back into contention for this summer’s Euros.

The midfielder got nine goals and four assists to help David Moyes’ side qualify for the Europa League.

The Man United man was included in the squad for their friendlies in March. Last week, Southgate also named him in his preliminary 33-man squad for the European Championships.

The England boss will drop seven players on Tuesday to finalise his 26-man squad.

The Athletic have revealed that Lingard will be one player to drop out from the squad.

The report says: “Lingard will miss out on England’s final Euro 2020 squad despite his impressive season for West Ham, The Athletic understands.

“The Manchester United forward spent the second half of the season on loan at the London Stadium and worked his way back into Gareth Southgate’s setup. He was named as part of the initial 33-man provisional squad last week.

“Southgate will name his 26-man squad on Tuesday and it is thought that Lingard will not be included in the final party for this summer’s tournament. ”

Lingard’s Man United teammate Mason Greenwood is also going to miss out. The forward shone for the Red Devils towards the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

But he is unable to join his England teammates at the Euros due to ongoing injury problems. An official statement from Man United confirmed the news:

“Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England Euro 2020 squad, in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the Under-21 European Championship in March,” a club statement read.

“Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and Europa League schedules.

“But a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will remain at Man United to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training.”
