Brendan Rodgers is one of the candidates to replace Jose Mourinho as Tottenham manager despite previous comments that ‘angered’ the club.
Tottenham’s search for a head coach is ongoing since Mourinho was sacked on Monday.
Under-23s coach Ryan Mason has stepped into the role until the end of the season but a more permanent appointment will be made in due course, with RB Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann thought to be the ‘dream solution’.
Bayern Munich’s interest in the young coach could complicate matters, however, meaning Rodgers has been put forward as an option by chairman Levy.
The 59-year-old ‘is trying to persuade his fellow execs’ about the suitability of the Leicester boss, whose previous ‘disparaging comments’ about the club could yet undermine his chances of leaving the club third in the Premier League to join one currently sat seventh.
Rodgers has been vocal about his decision to move to Liverpool instead of north London in 2012, suggesting it had been a “close shave”.
He called Tottenham “a great club” at the time but said he took “their history” into account and noted that “they’d had 11 managers in 18 years there, so for someone like myself, who needed to create something, I needed to go to a club that was going to give us that opportunity”.
How incredibly incendiary.
Despite those incredibly insulting words that ‘angered’ Spurs, The Sun say Levy will lobby for Rodgers to be appointed, and is ‘confident’ that they can persuade him to leave Leicester for them. Roy Hodgson disagrees. Paul Robinson reckons he “would walk down to London”.
The Northern Irishman openly discussed the links this month, saying: “It’s football, there is always speculation around, every job which comes up there will always be different managers speculated to go in.
“Tottenham is a fantastic club, it’s a huge club but my focus is here. I’m at a world-class training facility, the project we’re in here we still want to develop and have a lot of work to do.
“I have a great connection with the players, the board and we have plans to keep progressing.
“While I have the energy, the happiness and see that challenge continuing I’m very happy to be here. You can’t stop gossip but I don’t think about it.”
