Leicester, Everton ‘preparing summer bids’ for Brentford striker

Leicester and Everton are reportedly preparing summer bids for in-form Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

The 25-year-old is one of the stars of the Championship after netting 30 goals in 44 appearances.

His form has helped the Bees to secure a play-off place as they eye promotion to the Premier League.

According to The Athletic, Toney is likely to be playing in the top flight next season whether Brentford get promoted or not.

They report that Toney is wanted by Premier League sides Leicester and Everton, who are preparing to launch bids in the summer.

They will rival north London sides Arsenal and Tottenham for the forward’s signature.

Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho has been in brilliant form this campaign, scoring 14 goals in his last 15 games.

Brendan Rodgers has opted to play two up front in recent weeks, with Iheanacho partnering Jamie Vardy.

But with Vardy nearing the end of his career, Foxes chiefs want to sign Toney as his long-term successor.

They reckon the Championship man would be a hit in the Prem and would form a great partnership with Iheanacho at the King Power.

Stiff competition will be provided from Everton, however. Carlo Ancelotti wants a new striker to rival Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the Toffees hunt European qualification.

Just like at Leicester, Toney would likely be a big hit at Goodison Park.

We’ve already established that the goal-getter could become a star for Spurs. If Harry Kane were to leave in search trophies, then his compatriot Toney may be a shrewd replacement.

One detail yet to be revealed is Brentford’s asking price.

They will not want to lose their talisman and as such will expect a big transfer fee. The Bees have already sold Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma to top flight clubs in recent seasons.

Toney started his career with local side Northampton before joining Newcastle in August 2015. Loan spells with Barnsley, Scunthorpe and Wigan followed but he couldn’t get into the Magpies’ starting eleven on his return to St James’ Park.

He joined Peterborough United for £350,000 in 2018 and went on to hit 49 goals in 94 games for the Posh.

Brentford came calling two years later and he’s been bagging goals for the Championship club ever since.
