Konate ‘completes medical checks’ ahead of £34m Liverpool move

RB Leipzig star Ibrahima Konate has reportedly completed a number of ‘medical checks’ ahead of his proposed transfer to Liverpool this summer.

The Reds are said to be poised to activate the centre-back’s £34million release clause and negotiations with the player and his representatives are reportedly at an advanced stage.

Jurgen Klopp has really struggled with injuries to his defenders this season, with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all suffering long-term problems.

The German boss moved to remedy the situation in January, signing Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies, but he is clearly still keen to secure further reinforcements, with a deal for Konate edging closer to completion.

RMC Sport report that the Frenchman has already undergone a number of medical tests in Paris ahead of his move to Liverpool.

The 21-year-old has just over two years left on his current Leipzig deal and the report adds that he is the subject of interest from a number of top European clubs.

His representatives are said to be ‘cautious’ over Liverpool’s progress in securing the deal, but are also confident he is ready to take the ‘next step’ of his career at Anfield.

The news of the successful medical checks are significant given his struggles this season and last.

Muscular injuries and an ankle problem have limited him to just ten Bundesliga starts in the last two campaigns.

Meanwhile, Leipzig have not given up hope of keeping the promising defender and sporting director Markus Krosche insisted earlier this week the Premier League is “not an option” for Konate.

Krosche added: “He has a long contract with us and he knows what we mean to him and what he means to us.

“He was unlucky last year as he had a longer injury but this year he is in a good way and he is an extremely important player that has a lot of potential.

“We want to help him to further develop, and we play internationally, have a very good team, so I don’t see a reason for him to leave us.”
