Koeman shares worrying update for Barça fans on Messi’s contract extension

Time is running out for Barcelona to secure a new deal with Lionel Messi, and the latest update by coach Ronald Koeman may not help ease the tension among fans about watching their top footballer leaving the club this summer.

Intercepted by journalists at El Prat airport in Barcelona, Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman came clean about the Argentine supestar’s future at Camp Nou, and even if he would have wanted to share uplifting news, the truth is that Messi and the board have not reached an agreement to extend his contract. In fact, Barça’s board has kept him in the dark on this matter.

“I don’t know anything about Messi. As far as I know, the club is trying to reach an agreement to extend his deal because he is very important to the club, but that’s it,” Koeman said.

The coach’s words may be quite troubling to some because the footballer is nine days away from becoming a free player, and while fans remaing optimist about their chances to see Messi carrying on with his career as a Blaugrana, all options are still open with nine days left in his current deal.

The Dutch boss also referred to Memphis Depay’s arrival to Camp Nou in brief terms after his former pupil with the Oranje was confirmed as a new Blaugrana player during the weekend.

“He is a great signing, just like the signings of Eric García, Kun Agüero, or Emerson,” Koeman added.

Barcelona will begin preparing for a new season in the upcoming days, but with just over a week left before Messi’s future is sorted out, the main cause for concern for Barcelona fans will be to know the immediate future of the man that has re-written the team’s history with his massive amount of goals and titles.
