Klopp: Van Dijk return this season would be a ‘miracle’

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk is unlikely to return to action before the end of the season.

The Dutch centre-back suffered an ACL injury in October as a result of a collision with Everton’s Jordan Pickford.

He had an operation shortly after the game and it was quickly revealed that he was likely to be out for the rest of the 2020/21 season.

Liverpool have been dealt with more injury woes this season. Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have also been ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

The Premier League champions signed Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak on deadline day to ease their troubles at centre-back.

Speaking during his latest press conference, as cited by BBC Sport, Klopp said it is “not likely” that Van Dijk will play again this season:

“No doctor told me there’s a chance for Virgil to play again this season.

“I don’t want to say it’s impossible but it’s not likely. If there is no space we have to make a decision. If he is on the list it is only because we hope for a miracle, that is it.”

Klopp also insisted that it is a “big blow” that Liverpool will be without Matip for the remainder of the campaign.

He added: “I don’t have the right words for it. It’s a big, big blow.

“You lose the player on the pitch and also the person in the dressing room. It looks like he will need surgery so he will be away and you won’t have that personal contact. It’s really harsh.”
