Klopp ‘ignoring’ Alisson mistakes may be ‘effective’, says Friedel

Jurgen Klopp has been encouraged to “ignore” Alisson’s recent mistakes as he will come out of this experience “stronger”, according to Brad Friedel.

Alisson joined Liverpool in 2018 for around £66m from Roma. Since then, he has established himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in world football.

The Brazillian is currently going through his first slump in form since his move to the Premier League. He recently made two major mistakes that gifted Man City two goals in the space of just three minutes.

Alisson followed that up with another mistake against Leicester City that handed Jamie Vardy a goal last weekend. Speaking to Ladbrokes, as cited by the Daily Star, Friedel insisted that Liverpool’s number one must “learn” from his recent errors:

“If that game finishes 1-1, Liverpool are still in the title race. I know they’re some points behind but it’s not dead and buried and a draw against Man City means they’d have probably gone into their next game with a bit more confidence.

“But Alisson made back-to-back mistakes and now they’re so far behind City. And that’s happened to one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Any team in the world would take him every day of the week.

“If you look at every club in the top leagues in the world, they’ve got a number one, a reserve and sometimes even a back-up goalkeeper.

“All of them can collect crosses and stop shots. The thing that separates the top, top goalkeepers from the rest is how they bounce back from mistakes.

“We all make mistakes, but generally speaking a goalkeeper making a mistake leads to a goal and a goal going in generally changes the complexion of a game. So you have to be able to not let that affect you, while also learning from the experience.”

Friedel also suggested that it may be best for Klopp to “ignore” Alisson’s mistakes to help with his return to form:

He added: “He’s made mistakes before, he’ll make them again and I’m sure that he’s not only going to be fine, but he’ll come out of the experience stronger.

“Just because he’s made a couple of mistakes doesn’t mean he’s not still one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“I don’t know his personality; I don’t know whether he needs an arm around the shoulder or whether he just needs ignoring.

“Sometimes as a manager ignoring something like what’s happened with Alisson lately is just as effective. That way he still knows that he’s number one, he still knows he’s the best at the club and he can just get on with things.

“This is where having a manager like Jurgen Klopp helps because he’s one of the best on the planet, so he’ll know what Alisson needs.”
