Klopp identifies his ‘dream signing’ for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has picked out RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano as his “dream signing” ahead of this summer, according to reports.

Upamecano came through the ranks with French outfit Valenciennes. He attracted the interest of teams across Europe early into his senior career, but he eventually decided to join Red Bull Salzburg in July 2015 for a fee of around €2m.

He made 23 appearances for Salzburg before he was signed by RB Leipzig in January 2017 for a fee in the region of €10m.

In recent years, the 22-year-old has grown to become one of the highest-rated young centre-backs in world football.

The defender has already managed to make 139 senior appearances for the German side. He caught the eye of teams around Europe last season as Leipzig reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. He made 28 league appearances as his side finished third in the Bundesliga.

Upamecano has also recently broken into the senior team for France. He has been capped three times after he made his debut in September 2020.

Liverpool have suffered a lot of bad luck in terms of injuries this season. Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

Klopp hoped to amend this by signing Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies in January from Schalke and Preston respectively.

BILD have reported, as cited by The Mirror, that Klopp considers Upamecano to be a “dream signing” for Liverpool. The player will have a £37m release clause this summer, but the Reds will face competition from the likes of Bayern Munich for his signature.
