‘Furious’ Klopp seeking ‘urgent discussions’ with Liverpool owners

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly angry at FSG over their plans to enter the club into the European Super League without letting him know their intentions.

The Reds were named as one of 12 clubs, including six from the Premier League, who have formed a breakaway midweek competition in protest at UEFA’s Champions League reforms.

Although Klopp didn’t direct his anger at FSG in public, he reiterated his opinion that a European Super League would be bad for football.

OPINION: What do legacy fans do now? Return the contempt?

In the aftermath of their 1-1 draw to Leeds, Klopp said: “I will try to help and sort it somehow.”

Before the match he admitted his dislike for the idea, the German told Sky Sports: “I don’t think it’s a great idea. I like the fact West Ham might play Champions League next year. No problem. I don’t want them to, because we want to do that, but I like that they have that chance.”

Klopp showed diplomacy as he picked his words carefully, the Liverpool boss added: “I don’t think that, I don’t feel that. I am 20-something years in football. I’ve been used to owners making decisions without asking me.

“I know the owners, they are reasonable, serious people who care about us. I’m not sure if I’ve been more exposed than usual. The English system is like this — pretty much there’s one voice in the club and that’s the manager.

“It’s different to Germany. I’ve had enough time to get used to it. It’s not new but there will be a moment for sure when our owners say what they have to say.”

Despite his measured comments around the Leeds fixture, The Athletic claims ‘Klopp was furious over both FSG’s willingness to join the ESL and the timing of the announcement so close to a pivotal fixture against Leeds.’

A Liverpool shirt was burned as Klopp’s side were subjected to chants of ‘scum’ and ‘greedy bastards’ as they arrived at Elland Road on the team coach.

The Athletic added: ‘Players and staff were stunned by the abuse and vitriol they encountered on a pre-game walk in Leeds and then again when the Liverpool team coach arrived at the ground around 90 minutes before kick-off.’

It is understood that ‘Klopp intends to seek urgent discussions with the owners in the coming days’.
