Keown urges Mourinho to start Bale against Burnley

Martin Keown has insisted that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has “got to” start Gareth Bale against Burnley this weekend.

Bale left Tottenham in 2013 to join Real Madrid for a then world-record fee of £85.3m. He scored 105 times from 251 appearances for the Spanish giants.

With Madrid, he was a four-time winner of the Champions League and he also won La Liga on two separate occasions.

After falling out of favour with Zinedine Zidane, Bale rejoined Spurs on loan this summer for the remainder of the season.

The forward has not managed a regular run of games in the Premier League so far. He has only made two league starts this term, with six more of his outings coming off the bench.

Overall Bale has six goals and two assists from 19 appearances this season. The attacker played a key role as Tottenham beat Wolfsberger AC to advance to the last 16 of the Europa League. He got two goals and an assist over the tie as Spurs won 8-1 on aggregate.

Speaking to BT Sport, as cited by The Boot Room, Keown suggested that Bale is “purring again” for Tottenham:

“Watching him come on against West Ham, what he did this match against Wolfsberger. He’s started going through the gears now.

“He’s got to. Five defeats from six for Spurs [in the league, they’ve got to turn up now and Gareth Bale is coming into form at the right time and could rescue their season.”
