Lewandowski is not as good as Kane as ‘he only ripped it up in Germany’

Robert Lewandowski may have been named FIFA and UEFA player of the year last year but he cannot hold a candle to Harry Kane.

That is the opinion of former Arsenal midfielder turned Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson says the Tottenham striker is the most talented player in the England squad – and is a strong contender for world player of the year.

Kane will head to the Euros at the top of his game having bagged 27 goals and 16 assists for Jose Mourinho’s side this campaign.

He will join a squad brimming with potential in the summer, with the likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham all expected to be part of Gareth Southgate’s 23.

However, Merson believes Kane’s all-round qualities put him a cut above his team-mates and into the superstar bracket.

“I would say he is already the most talented player in the England squad – more talented than Grealish and Foden even.

“He scores so many goals, and he passes the ball better than both of them as well.

“Robert Lewandowski won the award for the best player in the world last year. But he’s not as good as Harry Kane.

“He’s only ripped it up in Germany. Kane is doing it in the Premier League.

“And I can’t remember Lewandowski touching the ball at the last World Cup. But Kane won the Golden Boot.”

But while Merson thinks Kane is the complete player, he cannot see past the big two when it comes to predicting the stars of the 2022 World Cup.

“The next World Cup is going to be about [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo for me. If one of them wins it, that would be the defining split between them for me.

“If Messi wins in Qatar, you have to say he is the best of all time. And the same goes for Ronaldo. We would finally have an answer to the question.

“I think it could happen too. I think the next World Cup is perfect for them, and I think they are already planning for it.

“The fact it’s going to start in November is a massive advantage for them. They will be fresh because they haven’t played a full, gruelling season of football.

“And when you’re fresh, talent takes over.”
