Relive all the thrills and spills of January deadline day 2021

For all the completed Premier League deals, head here.

00:08: Right, that’s us done. Will Minamino to Southampton go through? In a word: probably yes. Will we wait up for that to happen? No. Is it a genuinely good and potentially exciting move on a day of meh? Very much so, to the extent that we’ve gone and popped it in our Transfer Window Winners before it’s even happened because we are mavericks and, like we’ve said, mavericks who need their beds. Night, night.

23:54: I don’t ask for much, but if Minamino could be confirmed either way in the next three or four minutes that would be lovely. Ta.

23:47: Patrick Roberts’ loan deal at Middlesbrough from Man City cut short and he’s now off to Derby.

23:41: More deal sheet news from SSN. Shane Long to Bournemouth. Presumably Minamino contingent, but that’s to be confirmed. We’re not staying up a minute past midnight for any of this. We’re not as young as we once were.

23:37: Yes. Maja. Fulham. Loan. Option. And Neeskens Kebano has left Fulham for a cheeky loan spell at Middlesbrough.

23:36: Think Josh Maja has joined Fulham. Got distracted by Harry Redknapp saying “Tottingham” if I’m entirely honest. No need for this at such an hour.

23:27: Josh King has signed for Everton. Lets get everything else mopped up now please now.

23:13: Golf bantz from Redders now. Playing all the hits. In other news, I reckon we’re just waiting for Josh King and its related dominoes (Maja, Gordon) and Minamino to go through. Sky reckon “at least two deal sheets” submitted. Let’s all cross everything and hope there’s nothing on top of that lot.

23:09: Redknapp’s telling his Benjani story. Drink.

23:06: SSN reckon Anthony Gordon to Preston is done. This implies Josh King to Everton is done.

23:03: Tick Joe Willock off the list. Done. Newcastle. Loan. More, more, more.

23:00: The window is closed. Good few things still TBC though.

22:54: Josh King’s move to Everton should precipitate a couple more, it seems. Josh Maja to Fulham, who were also close to signing King, and Anthony Gordon from Everton to Preston on loan. Minamino looks like being this year’s deal sheet late one. Am I waiting up until 1am for that one? MinamiNO.

22:47: Barring something absolutely f***ing mental in the next few minutes, the biggest news of deadline day is not a transfer.

22:46: Now looks like Josh King is going to Everton rather than Fulham according to various journo Twitter accounts. Looked like going the other way an hour ago.

22:42: Big Sam having a big deadline day. Ainsley Maitland-Niles joins West Brom on loan.

22:37: Just 23 minutes until the deadline now. Nearly there. We’re in deal sheet territory. Bed soon.

22:35: SSN have made Paul Gilmour stand outside the Tottenham training ground in the freezing cold to give the exact same update about Dele Alli  – that update being that nothing is happening – once an hour for the last three hours with absolutely no prospect of anything else happening there either. Poor bastard.

22:20: Genuinely big news here, and it explains a lot. Jurgen Klopp says Joel Matip is out for the rest of the season with an ankle ligament injury. Very much explains the urgency in getting two centre-backs over the line today. Being a Liverpool centre-back is like being a Spinal Tap drummer.

22:13: Ozan Kabak doesn’t sound like someone planning on going back to Schalke at the end of his initial Liverpool loan. There is an option to buy in the deal.

22:09: Shkodran Mustafi to Schalke is DONE. Six-month freebie.

22:00: The big deals just keep on coming. Paulo Gazzaniga has joined Elche on loan for the rest of the season. A significant blow to the overall handsomeness of the Premier League there.

21:59: Liverpool confirm Ozan Kabak has signed on loan. Option to buy for about £18m by all accounts.

21:48: Enough Redknapp badinage. Minamino to Southampton seems to be a goer, while elsewhere the whispers seem to suggest Deadline Day’s Josh King is leaning more towards Fulham than Everton.

21:46: In the least surprising news of deadline day, Harry Redknapp couldn’t work his sat-nav.

21:45: Unlike Roger Moore, Harry Redknapp has made it to the studio.

21:38: SSN now reporting on Dele Alli’s Twitter likes. It’s not all progress.

21:36: Words on Minamino here. A genuinely interesting possibility in the closing stages, fair play.

21:33: Jonjoe Kenny has joined Celtic on loan for the rest of the 2020/21 campaign.

Look, it says so here.

21:24: We did tell you.

21:23: Looks like the last hour-and-a-half of this is mainly going to be about Josh King, in accordance with the prophecy.

21:16: Look, we’ve had a pop at Jim Smith a few times down the years, but he’s just segued from Harry Redknapp’s traffic problems to an interview with Peter Odemwingie in grand style. “My studio guest is not where he should be on deadline day, and speaking of people who know all about not being where they should be on deadline day…”

You have to say that’s magnificent.

21:11: Just as we all thought there was nothing happening apart from Redknapp winding down his windows to chat to randoms at an M3 service station, up pops Ornstein to tease the possibility of Takumi Minamino joining Southampton on loan from Liverpool. Saucy.

21:09: JURGEN KLOPP IN ASTONISHING PRESTON BLAST

21:01: There’s literally nothing happening, but Harry Redknapp is stuck in traffic on his way to the Sky Sports Studio in one of the more literal yet surreal #AccidentalPartridges ever seen. Jim White definitely isn’t going to milk this, so that’s good.

20:54: Fulham and Everton have both agreed deals with Bournemouth for Deadline Day Stalwart Josh King, Sky Sports News announce with the breathlessness normally reserved for a military coup.

20:30: The other side of the Ben Davies deal now also confirmed.

20:15: We need answers. No wonder he claimed never to have been to Anfield if he’d left a dirty protest.

19:58: Now it’s confirmed. Twenty-eight minutes the final gun-jumping time from Preston, and in a real classy touch that’s also Ben Davies’ new Liverpool shirt number. “I’ve never actually been to Anfield,” very much the standout from the otherwise standard transfer chatter from the new boy.

19:54: This is our biggest story today. #DeadlineDay #RealQuiz

19:49: Some words on Liverpool ‘blowing Newcastle out of the water’ for Ozan Kabak here.

19:45: ORNSTEIN UPDATE on #paperwork and Nelson. And New Order apparently, for some reason.

19:40: Preston, you’ve lost the news! They’ve now removed the bit in their Liam Lindsay statement about Ben Davies. It did say “takes the No. 6 shirt left vacant after Ben Davies completed his permanent move to Liverpool.”

It now says: None of that bit. Just the Lindsay stuff.

Could the transfer have hit A LATE SNAG? Probably not tbh. The Alex Neil quotes about the fact they’d been keeping an eye on left-sided centre-backs in case Davies left remains. Still, though. This officially counts as DEADLINE DAY DRAMA these days.

19:32: Preston have given Ben Davies’ No. 6 shirt to their new signing Liam Lindsay. Cold. Also the first actual confirmation we’ve had of Davies’ move to Liverpool. Nothing yet from the Premier League champions.

19:30: Sky Sports News now absolutely Partridging on about vegan leather shoes. All very worthy, but Deadline Day isn’t what it was, is it?

19:11: Ozan Kabak update? OK then.

19:00: The year is 2021. The world is burning. And yet Josh King is still the headline story on transfer deadline day, Everton apparently taking a good old look at him.

18:47: Anyone with a fetish for Arsenal loan news is in luck. BBC are reporting Joe Willock to Newcastle as being pretty much done. The move to West Brom for Ainsley Maitland-Niles is not quite as far along but the medical is sorted. Now for the #paperwork.

18:31: Bit quiet.

18:19: Cenk Tosun. Besiktas. Loan.

Interest in Daniel Sturridge from MLS. Is he really no better than that?

18:14: Not sure Tottenham will be activating the £42.7m option to buy Gedson Fernandes permanently from Benfica. His 18-month loan has been cut short to facilitate a move to Galatasaray temporarily.

Expect Jose Mourinho to blame any future Tottenham issues on his squad being so depleted by his absence.

18:10: That transfer merry-go-round involving Nathaniel Chalobah (to Leicester), Hamza Choudhury (to Newcastle) and Matty Longstaff (to Watford) is off, according to David Ornstein, owing to the Longstaff aspect.

It is notoriously difficult to negotiate three-ways, to be fair.

18:08: The final piece of the Ozan Kabak jigsaw has fallen into place as Arsenal have apparently negotiated the termination of Shkodran Mustafi‘s contract, freeing him up to join Schalke.

The Gunners had initially wanted a small fee but will instead simply release a centre-half they signed for £35m all those years ago. His pay-off is said to be worth less than the value of what is left on his deal, mind.

18:01: Braga plan to keep Carmo and carry on.

In other news, lol West Brom.

Okay Yukuslu, Celta Vigo midfielder, FWIW. In on loan. Up Big Sam.

17:51: Sounds like Josh Maja from Bordeaux to Fulham on loan could still happen.

17:43: Wayne Rooney has pulled some strings to bring Teden Mengi in from Manchester United. Cute.

17:37: It is a dreadful shame that Sami Khedira has gone to Hertha Berlin. He will be linked with a Premier League move again soon enough.

17:26: Oh, some news.

17:17: Gedson Fernandes is off to Turkey in an ambulance plane.

That reads like a random word generator, granted, but he’s tested positive for COVID and Galatasaray like the jib of his cut. Daniel Levy will presumably get £40m for the Tottenham loanee.

17:05: Big move.

16:51: Ignore that 16:01 update because Liverpool never fancied David Carmo anyway. Ozan Kabak was always the guy for them.

The usual suspects have all reported, within a handful of seconds of each other, that Liverpool have reached an agreement with Schalke to loan the centre-half with an option to buy for £18m on a five-year contract in the summer.

That is incredibly and beautifully specific. He shall henceforth be known as the Turkish Steven Caulker regardless.

16:44: All of this is, of course, immaterial because now I want Felipe Caicedo of FM08 to wreak havoc on defences across the globe again. Come home, sweet prince.

16:41: Yer man David Carmo over at Braga is getting some attention again. It seems that Liverpool, having left their homework until the last minute, will overcompensate by signing Ben Davies and A.N. Other.

The most likely option is still Ozan Kabak yet Sky are stirring the Carmo pot once more. There have been supposed talks over a loan with an option to buy.

16:34: We have updates on deadline day’s adopted son, Josh King, as well as Paul Merson putting Ozan Kabak’s agent forward for New Year’s honours. Bit late.

16:23: Joe Willock to Newcastle is still being talked up. Arsenal have been quite busy as it happens; they have agreed to lend Ainsley Maitland-Niles to West Brom for a bit.

He will undergo a medical rather shortly, but Sky Sports say that will take place in London as the Baggies don’t want to risk him taking the long journey down to start those proceedings. That’s more to do with time constraints than it not being essential travel, you’d assume.

16:04: No sooner have the live transfer blog keys changed hands than we have an actual deal. Get in the lads. Waters all round.

Brighton have signed Moises Caicedo. If he’s anywhere near as good as Felipe then they’ll be in the Champions League next season.

16:00: Back to Josh King now and the talk in Norway (from where King hails) is that ‘intense work is going on behind the scenes in the hours before the transfer deadline at midnight’ as his people talk to Fulham. We’re not sure we’re comfortable with that level of work; we like to keep things casual.

15:50: Talking of loan moves from Manchester clubs, Teden Mengi is close to completing a loan move from United to Derby County.

15:31: Taylor Harwood-Bellis has left Manchester City on loan for Blackburn. The 19-year-old defender has not got beyond the bench in the Premier League this season. And that really is as good as it’s got today.

15:27: One transfer merry-go-round appears to have groundhog to a halt. There seemed to be a possibility that Nat Chalobah would join Leicester, who would allow Hamza Choudhury to join Newcastle, who would in turn send Matty Longstaff to Watford. But time appears to be running out to conclude that deal as the Hornets are playing tonight.

15:25: What of Josh King? We heard earlier that he had priced himself out of a move to Southampton. But could he still join Everton? They have made contact but no firm offers, according to the BBC. The Toffees could certainly do with another attacking option after allowing Cenk Tosun to leave. Outgoings-wise, a loan deal to Celtic for Jonjoe Kenny is expected to be concluded today.

15:19: Talking of unwanted defenders, it seems that Shkodran Mustafi has reached an agreement with Arsenal for the termination of his contract, meaning he will be free to join Schalke as a replacement for Ozan Kabak. Come on now…let’s get one over the line before 4pm.

15:17: ‘Phil Jones’ is trending. It pretty much sums up this deadline day that he is trending because he will be added to Manchester United’s Premier League squad. Presumably because Marcos Rojo could finally be leaving the club.

15:08: A reminder that we are still waiting for official confirmation from Liverpool that they have signed Ben Davies from Preston. He is expected to move in a deal worth just £500,000 up front with another £1.1m due in add-ons. Celtic, Bournemouth and Sheffield United also said to be interested but Liverpool unsurprisingly won that race.

And then there’s Ozan Kabak, likely to join from Schalke:

15:00: We have an update from Sky Sports on Ainsley Maitland-Niles. They claim he met with Mikel Arteta today to try and secure a loan move but was told that they would not sanction a move to Leicester City, who Arsenal see as a rival for a Champions League place. Southampton were said to be interested but they wanted him as a wing-back and AMN sees his future as a midfielder. Newcastle were also interested but they might opt for Joe Willock instead, leaving the England man with West Brom as possibly his last remaining option.

14:59: We forgot about this guy. It seems Brighton are confident of signing teenage Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo before the transfer deadline. Never mind a midfielder, somebody tell them that they need a striker.

14:56: Portuguese centre-back Roderick Miranda has been released by Wolves. At this juncture, we are claiming that as a done deal.

14:51: MailOnline tell us that ‘Manchester City have no interest in signing Diego Costa as a short-term measure up front’. Well of course they don’t. Why would they? They are top of the Premier League and Sergio Aguero will presumably play some football again at some point.

14:47: Manchester City are close to agreeing a deal with Rochdale for 18-year-old forward Kwadwo Baah, who will go straight back out on loan. Central defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis is set to join Blackburn on loan.

14:43: Southampton did apparently enquire about Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga but were told that Tottenham were reluctant to lose a player who has played not a single minute of Premier League football this season. At this stage, we are surprised they loaned out Troy Parrott.

14:40: Arsenal are still looking for a left-back it seems – Cedric Soares is not a long-term option there. Outgoings-wise, we are still waiting on Ainsley Maitland-Niles to West Brom and Joe Willock to Newcastle, both of which seem likely. Reiss Nelson looks likely to stay.

14:35: Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson was asked about any potential interest from Arsenal for full-back Patrick van Aanholt, but he says there has been nothing. “I’ve heard nothing but if you’re asking me if I think he’s good enough to play for Arsenal – yes I do,” he said. “This is where he is contracted and where I expect him to stay.”

14:27: You have to feel for Dele Alli right now. Cannot help wondering why Tottenham need a ‘replacement’ for a player who has played 74 minutes of Premier League football all season.

14:16: Increasingly unlikely that Josh King will join Southampton as – according to David Ornstein – he wants ‘parity with what he was earning in the Premier League and/or what he can command as a free agent in summer’. And Southampton are presumably offering him the wages he would earn as a second-choice striker at a middling Premier League club.

14:14: It looks like Marcos Rojo is very, very close to ending his six-year-plus stint at Manchester United, who are released him to join Boca Jnrs on a free transfer. He’s in Argentina and having a medical.

13:45: Weren’t we waiting on Mustafi to Schalke for Kabak to be done?

13:40: Three Arsenal players going nowhere today. Literally and metaphorically…

Reiss Nelson was available to for loan but the Gunners received no suitable offers. The same goes for Calum Chambers. There was some talk of recalling Lucas Torreira from his loan at Atletico Madrid in order to dispatch him somewhere he might play, but the Uruguayan will remain in Spain until the end of the season.

13:35: Man Utd fans, you might as well get yourselves to bed…

13:30: The Mirror’s John Cross has given us more insight into Maitland-Niles’ thinking. Apparently, he didn’t fancy Southampton because they wanted him as a full-back and he would prefer a midfield role. With Arsenal reluctant to deal with Leicester, that leaves West Brom with a clear run at the England international.

13:25: After growing tired of Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ sh*t, Southampton have changed their aim across north London…

13:20: Liverpool’s Plan B should they fail to sign Ozan Kabak appears to be Braga defender David Carmo.

It seems Liverpool and Schalke are still negotiating over whether the deal for Kabak should include an option to buy or an obligation. In the meantime, Schalke are trying to sign Shkodran Mustafi.

Might Arsenal f*** Liverpool here?

13:15: From Sky Sports: ‘Tottenham defender Japhet Tanganga will find out today whether he will be allowed to leave on loan.’

Well, yeah.

13:05: Sky Germany reporting that the deal on Schalke’s table for Mustafi is for six months. So he will still become a free agent this summer, just in time to swerve the consequences of Schalke’s relegation…

13:00: Just Leicester and West Brom left in the race for Ainsley Maitland-Niles….

12:55: The Evening Standard says Tottenham keeper Paulo Gazzaniga is in talks with Elche.

A year ago, Jose Mourinho said it hurt to leave Gazzaniga out of the Spurs side upon Hugo Lloris’s return. Then he signed Joe Hart…

12:40: Just over four hours left for Schalke to get Mustafi in.

12:25: An update on some Leeds players you’ve never heard of…

Swansea have had a loan approach rejected for striker Sam Greenwood… there is interest from Germany in Jay-Roy Grot… Las Palmas are set to take Rafa Mujica on loan… and this on the most Irish name in football…

12:21: Word.

12:05: It sounds like someone heard our plea to bring back Diego Costa.

Sky Sports says one top-six club has offered the former Chelsea and Atletico Madrid striker a contract until the end of the season.

The current top six: City, United, Liverpool, Leicester, WEST HAM, Tottenham.

But Costa wants a longer deal. Apparently, from his next club, he is asking for a two-and-a-half-year contract worth around £100,000 a week.

FFS, Diego.

12:00: Troy Parrott is reportedly returning to Tottenham from his loan at Millwall.

But the teenager need not take off his coat. He’s set to be sent straight to Ipswich on loan for the rest of the season.

11:55: One centre-back leaving City, but it’s not Eric Garcia…

Jayden Braaf is also expected to join Udinese on loan.

11:50: Progress in Liverpool’s pursuit of Ozan Kabak. He might be dropping his trousers and coughing for a doctor this very minute…

11:40: Ah, FFS…

Diego Costa is a free agent, though, meaning he could sign for a Premier League club after the deadline. Someone, anyone, just do it.

11:35: It’s being widely reported that Matt Ritchie is staying at Newcastle too after Bournemouth’s offer was rejected.

Steve Bruce didn’t sound too optimistic over that one when he was questioned earlier.

11:30: An update on the transfer triangle involving Leicester, Newcastle and Watford mentioned in the Gossip below…

According to Sky Sports, as it stands, Newcastle won’t sanction Matty Longstaff‘s move to Watford. And even if they did, the midfielder doesn’t seem all that convinced that he would get the game time he wants.

Those sticking points are holding up potential deals involving Hamza Choudhury and Nathaniel Chalobah.

11:25: Terry Taylor’s given us the transfer tingle again…

11:20: Giuseppe Marotta there, p*ssing on everyone’s chips…

11:15: Liverpool are waiting on Schalke to sign a replacement for Ozan Kabak. The man Schalke apparently want? Shkodran Mustafi.

If Arsenal have anything about them, they will drag this out for as long as they can.

11:10: This would be a big chance for Joe Willock. The midfielder has made only two starts for Arsenal for this season…

11:05: Winston Reid‘s loan to Brentford is confirmed…

11:00: Reports in France suggest Liverpool’s deal for Duje Caleta Car is dead.

According to RMC, Marseille have refused an offer worth around £20million.

10:50: According to Sky Sports, Fulham are in talks with Bordeaux over a loan move for Josh Maja.

West Brom were also linked with the former Sunderland striker last week.

Fulham, however, may have to shift a player off their books first before they can get Maja through the door.

10:45: An Okay bit of business for Big Sam…

Celta Vigo midfielder Okay Yokuslu has passed his medical at West Brom and is set to join on loan until the end of the season.

You want more details? You’re in luck.

10:40: Winston Reid was apparently being offered to Liverpool last week, but today he is all set to join Brentford on loan until the end of the season.

Reid has only just returned to West Ham after a loan spell at Sporting Kansas City.

A reminder that he was given a six-year contract in 2017.

10:30: Steve Bruce has been chatting about a what ‘could be a busy day” for Newcastle. He hopes to do “one or two things”…

On Hamza Choudhury: “Yes it’s been the case all window that we are waiting on things happening at the other end. We’ll see what today brings. I haven’t said that it’s just necessarily just Hamza Choudhury – you keep saying that. We have got one or two things bubbling along.”

On Matt Ritchie perhaps going back to Bournemouth: “That one is up in the air. We will see where we are later in the day with that one. He is well thought of but has found himself frustrated not being a regular. He has to understand if it doesn’t happen he gets his head down and work hard until the end of the season.”

On DeAndre Yedlin‘s move to Galatasaray: “Quite simply, we’ve had three right-backs and I think DeAndre’s suited to playing as a wing-back. It’s no secret we’ve tried to change to a back four. I’d like to wish DeAndre the very best of luck. He’s a great pro.”

10:20: Sky Sports says Schalke have identified the replacement they want if they are to sanction Kabak’s move to Liverpool.

But there is no guarantee that Schalke will get the business done. Liverpool have apparently offered a loan fee of £2.5million while retaining an option to buy in the summer. Kabak joined Schalke from Stuttgart in 2019 for £13million.

10:10: Liverpool appear to making contingency plans if Marseille can’t be persuaded to part with Duje Caleta Car.

Our friends at Sport Witness inform us of a report from Sky Germany that the Reds have opened talks with Schalke over Ozan Kabak. Liverpool want a loan deal with the option to buy in the summer.

Schalke, though, have the same problem as Marseille. They would have to source a replacement and the German transfer window closes at 5pm.

Tick, tock…

9:55: Christian Eriksen is going nowhere today. Which is probably bad news for Dele Alli

9:50: Newcastle are chasing midfielders today, with Hamza Choudhury heavily linked.

The Toon have also been sniffing around Celtic’s Oliver Ntcham but it seems they have competition. RMC Sport in France says Marseille have made an approach over a loan deal with the option to buy.

9:35: A transfer! An actual, real-life transfer!

Glenn Murray has left Brighton – again – to join Nottingham Forest on a deal until the end of the season.

9:30: There was talk of Danny Rose going to Trabzonspor to, y’know, play some football.

But Sky Sports says it won’t be happening. So the Tottenham defender will remain sat on his arse for the remainder of the season until his contract expires.

9:20:  Some further details on Liverpool’s deal for Ben Davies, courtesy of the Liverpool Echo

Liverpool will pay £500,000 up front for the centre-back with an additional £1.1million due in add-ons, including an England call-up bonus.

Celtic, Bournemouth and Burnley were also in for Davies, but in the case of Burnley, Preston did not want to sell to a local rival. Playing in a different league.

9:15: Start the Car.

Liverpool’s could still land the Marseille defender today…

9:05: Another Scandinavian stopper is on the move. Jonas Lossl has left Everton to rejoin FC Midtjylland.

The once-capped Denmark keeper made not a single appearance for Everton after joining from Huddersfield in 2019. Lossl spent the second half of last season back in West Yorkshire.

9:00: Norwich have signed a keeper Aston Villa cut loose a few months ago.

And you thought there would be no big deals today…

8:55: This time last year, Odion Ighalo was signing on loan for Man Utd.

Now, upon leaving United last week, the Nigeria striker is being lined for a move to Al-Shabab. Sky Sports says Shanghai Shenhua have given Ighalo the green light to discuss personal terms with the Saudi side, which are hardly likely to be a problem.

The window in Saudi Arabia is open until next Sunday.

8:45: Wayne Rooney has apparently called in a few favours at Manchester United…

The Derby boss is set to make his first signing as manager in the shape of Teden Mengi. The 18-year-old defender is expected to complete a loan move until the end of the season.

8:40: You know we said Billy Gilmour was all set to stay at Chelsea. Yeah, about that…

The Daily Mail says the Scotland midfielder is in talks over a loan move to Southampton.

Read all about it here.

8:25: Celtic were set to sign Ben Davies before Jurgen Klopp ruined everything.

But Neil Lennon looks set to take one defender from Merseyside. Jonjoe Kenny is expected to complete a loan move from Everton today.

8:15: There were some rumblings around Vicente Guaita over the weekend amid interest from Real Sociedad.

But the Crystal Palace keeper has just signed a new contract until 2023. Great news for everyone at Palace not named Jack Butland…

8:10: ‘What’s going on at Manchester United?’ we hear you ask…

In short, f*** all. In terms of incomings, at least.

Ed Woodward is spending his deadline day trying for the umpteenth time to shift some deadwood. The Sun reckons Woodward will be shredding Marcos Rojo‘s contract so that the defender can join Boca Juniors as a free agent. Rojo has been in United’s XI in the Premier League just five times signing a new contract worth around £100,000 a week in March 2018. Which works out at around £3million per start.

8:00: One player to watch today could be Patrick van Aanholt.

The word according to The Athletic is that Arsenal haven’t yet been in touch with Crystal Palace, but that could change with Mikel Arteta short on left-sided options.

7:55: There was talk last week of Billy Gilmour being allowed to leave Chelsea on loan for the rest of the season.

That probably wont be happening now. According to several sources, Gilmour wants to stay and suss out Thomas Tuchel.

7:50: Latest from Newcastle, where Steve Bruce is basking in the glory of his first win in 12 games. He said after Saturday’s triumph that the club were ‘working on one or two things’…

7:40: Who’s feeling Orny this morning?

ORRRNNNSSSTTTEEEEEEEIIINNN’s first offering today via The Athletic is another snippet on Josh King. The Gossip mentioned that Burnley were in for the Bournemouth striker. Now it seems Southampton are in the driving seat. Saints are set to pay a low fee for the forward who is out of contract at the end of the season.

To sweeten the deal, Saints will send Shane Long to Bournemouth on loan with the option to buy.

7:30: L’Equipe‘s headline this morning: Idrissa Gueye décline Newcastle.

That tells you all you need to know. Newcastle wanted the former Everton midfielder, he didn’t want them and he told them so. Next.

7:25: Ooh, interesting. According to Football Insider, Everton are plotting a deadline-day move for Ivan Perisic.

With Bernard possibly heading out to Al Nasr for around £9million, Carlo Ancelotti wants the Inter Milan winger as a replacement.

7:20: Christian Benteke need to bother packing his bags…

7:15: It’s threatening to be an interesting deadline day for Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The versatile Arsenal star is eyeing a temporary move to cement a place in England’s squad for the European Championships but at one point last week, it seemed that West Brom was his best option. Southampton and Newcastle are interested.

But it is widely reported this morning that Brendan Rodgers is riding to his rescue. Leicester want to sign Maitland-Niles on loan until the end of the season, and Arsenal don’t seem to have a problem with it.

7:00: Good morning and welcome to January deadline day 2021. It’s been a quiet month, so it’s bound to be an exciting last few hours up to 11pm, right? Right?!

Stay here while we try our hardest to pretend that things are happening. Let’s be honest, you’ve nothing better to do…

Let’s begin with the early morning Gossip. Because breakfast is always better with a side portion of freshly-laid bullsh*t.

REDS TARGET TWO DEFENDERS
Liverpool need a centre-back. That has been obvious all month, but Jurgen Klopp appears only in the last week to have only reconciled himself to that reality.

Two names are in the frame to fill Klopp’s void. So to speak. The first is Ben Davies. Once the Preston defender has picked himself up off the floor, he’ll be heading to Merseyside this morning for a medical before completing a £2million move. Read more about that one here.

Liverpool had also reached an agreement with Marseille to bring Duje Caleta Car to Anfield. But the French club have thrown le spanner in le works.

RMC Sport reports that the 24-year-old and his girlfriend went to Mairgnane airport to board a private jet bound for Manchester to complete his move to the Reds.

But Marseille refused to clear Caleta Car for take-off because they decided they might struggle to recruit a replacement, especially while they are dampening down their training ground after hundreds of ultras stormed the base on Saturday.

A deal is not entirely out of the question, but it appears unlikely before the deadline.

DELE ALLI’S PSG DEAL STALLS
Dele Alli probably hasn’t had a good night’s sleep. The Tottenham attacker is keen for a reunion with Mauricio Pochettino at PSG which would be a great move for the 24-year-old.

But Spurs are making Alli sweat. Jose Mourinho has always appeared willing to wave the player on his way since he won’t pick the former England star. But Daniel Levy seems far more reluctant and without a replacement, it is likely that Alli will be made to stay.

Spurs have come around to the prospect of re-signing Christian Eriksen on loan but Fabrizio Romano, among others, is reporting that deal has stalled, with Inter Milan now open to keeping the Denmark star in the wake of his last-gasp winner against AC Milan last week. Eriksen also started on Saturday and assisted the opening goal.

MIDFIELD TRIO IN TRANSFER TRIANGLE
There’s an interesting transfer triangle developing between Leicester, Newcastle and Watford.

According to the Leicester Mercury, Brendan Rodgers wants to bring Nathaniel Chalobah to the King Power. Rodgers worked with the 26-year-old at Chelsea  and having seen the midfielder string together 24 appearances in Watford’s midfield, the Foxes boss wants to give Chalobah another crack at the Premier League.

With a midfielder set to arrive at Leicester, Hamza Choudhury will be allowed to leave on loan, with Newcastle his most likely destination.

That will leave Matty Longstaff free to join Watford on loan for the rest of the season.

Let’s be honest, this is the level of transfer we’ll be dealing with today.

KING FOR ANOTHER DEADLINE DAY
It wouldn’t be deadline day without some mention of Joshua King.

The Bournemouth striker was one of several strikers Manchester United were chasing this time last year while a move to West Ham failed to materialise in the last hours of the summer window.

Today, it is Burnley’s turn to tease the Norway striker. The Lancashire Telegraph says Sean Dyche wants to bring King to Turf Moor. But there is work to be done, with King’s salary said to be a stretch for the Clarets.
