Redknapp picks out ‘bullied’ Arsenal man who is ‘past his best’

Jamie Redknapp thinks Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is now “past his best” and thinks he looks like “he’ll get bullied on every occasion”.

The Gabon international has only managed eight goals in the Premier League this season with 13 matches left to play, despite hitting 22 last campaign.

The 31-year-old has put in a number of disappointing performances this term but looked to be back in form when he hit a hat-trick against Leeds United just over a week ago.

However, Martin Keown picked up on his “strange” display against Benfica in their midweek Europa League draw and Redknapp was less than pleased with what he saw in the Gunners’ 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.

“I look at Aubameyang… Aubameyang’s past his best,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“He’s going to have moments, he’s going to get hat-tricks. When I watch him sometimes it’s like he’s lost his superpower. I saw him run past people when he first came to the Premier League, I saw him run past people when he was at Dortmund.

“I’m seeing now a player who looks like he’ll get bullied on every occasion. And he’s your leading light. The likes of Saka and Smith Rowe, they’re the ones leading the way, it’s the other players who I feel have got to step up more.”

City extended their record-breaking run in their victory over Arsenal but Pep Guardiola felt they were pushed hard by the Gunners under his former assistant Mikel Arteta.

“It was a really tough game,” Guardiola said after the match. “We didn’t have the players that we used to play and create our game because Mikel is so clever and they make man to man in the build up.

“It was really difficult to find the right players to attack better but we were consistent again. We started incredibly well again and for 15-20 minutes was so brilliant.

“After they were better than us, we could not press, we could not have the ball and they didn’t create much but there were crosses.

“We made a brilliant second half, it was so good. We are delighted for the three points because it is the Emirates, Arsenal away, and I know Mikel, how good he is and how well his team plays.”
