Carragher claims Man Utd have ‘bottled it’ in title race

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher thinks Man Utd have “bottled it” in the Premier League title race after their 3-3 draw against Everton.

Having thrashed nine-man Southampton by a Premier League record-equalling 9-0 scoreline on Tuesday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men left Old Trafford on Saturday evening reeling from a late gut punch.

After Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez cancelled out Edinson Cavani’s header and Bruno Fernandes’ exquisite effort, Scott McTominay looked to have steered Man Utd to victory.

But Lucas Digne’s free-kick deep in stoppage time was flicked on and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored with the last kick of the game to secure Everton a 3-3 draw at the death.

And after the match Solskjaer conceded that Man Utd should not be involved in chat about possible title challengers.

“We’re not talking about winning titles,” said Solskjaer. “We shouldn’t even be considered as title-chasers. That’s one for [the media].”

And Carragher has been surprised to hear Man Utd talking themselves out of the Premier League title race when they are only five points behind leaders Manchester City.

“I think Man United have bottled it now they’ve got there, they’ve almost talked themselves out of it,” Carragher said on Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s 4-1 loss to Man City.

“I think it’s only Liverpool who can stop [Man City] – I don’t think Man United fancy it.

“Listening to the comments of the Manchester United manager… Man United just seem happy to be involved – I cannot believe it.”
