Thierry Henry has likened the “lethal” Erling Haaland to Manchester United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Haaland joined Red Bull Salzburg from Molde in January 2019. During his prolific spell there, he netted 29 times from just 27 outings.
This form alerted clubs around Europe. Manchester United were interested, but he opted to join Borussia Dortmund. The signing was confirmed in December 2020 for a fee of around €2om.

Haaland has been superb since his move to the Bundesliga, as he has netted 47 times for Dortmund from 48 games across all competitions. He has scored 20 Champions League goals from just 14 games, which is the fastest any player has reached that tally in the competition.
Nistelrooy spent five years at Manchester United between 2001 and 2006. In that time, he scored 150 times from his 219 appearances.
Speaking during Monday Night Football, as cited by Manchester Evening News, Henry suggested that Haaland is only interested in scoring goals:
“He doesn’t care about anything else other than the goal. Other players will go onto the wing, he wants to stay in the frame of the net, in between the two posts, he knows he’s lethal there.
“He is so powerful, by the way, if you look at him, you think: ‘Oh, trouble’. The way he finishes is just ridiculous. He believes so much in himself. I like that – there’s a bit of cockiness about him. You’ve got to be a bit cocky, you’ve got to look and people and think you can score.
“Yes (similar to van Nistelrooy), him, the likes of – not so much in our day – Pele, but the desire that they have. They want to kill. They want to be in the box, they’re looking at the defender and thinking: ‘You’re not going to be able to live with me’.
“I can see sometimes when the midfielder doesn’t give him the ball. That look you sometimes give your midfielder, like: ‘Eh, are you going to give me the ball? I want to score now, I want to be the guy who’s going to make the team win’. I can see that with him.”
