Henderson is ‘100% ready’ to replace De Gea, says his former boss

Dean Henderson has “incredible self-belief” and his quality makes him ready to dislodge David De Gea, according to his former manager Paul Hurst.

The goalkeeper joined Manchester United in 2011 when he was just 14-years-old. After a successful loan spell with Shrewsbury Town, he joined Sheffield United in 2018.

Henderson played 86 times for the Blades during a brilliant couple of years for the club. His second loan spell with them ended last season.

The Englishman linked back up with Man United at the start of this campaign to compete with David De Gea for a starting spot.

De Gea has been preferred for much of this season, but Henderson is getting a run of games at the moment. He has played 15 times for United so far this term.

Hurst, who managed Henderson at Shrewsbury, told takSPORT that the ‘keeper believes he can have an “incredible impact” on his team:

“He genuinely believes he can have an incredible impact on the team that he is part of.

“It’s the way he helped Shrewsbury and then Sheffield United. There is something with Dean that is hard to describe.

“There is an incredible self-belief, but it rubs off on other people and his teammates.

“When players went through on goal, you were disappointed if he didn’t save it.

“He gave you that confidence and belief that it would take something special to beat him.

“If Dean made some of the mistakes De Gea has made, the comment would be it shows he’s not quite ready. One hundred per cent, Dean is ready to take over from De Gea.

“That’s not to say there might not be a mistake or dip in form, but he has a presence about him.

“He will back himself and be confident that he can do the job for Man United.

“If he doesn’t get to be No.1 very, very soon, it wouldn’t surprise me if he was looking to go elsewhere because lots of footballers want to play, but one, he has the ability and two, he has a stronger desire to play than other footballers.”
