Hasenhuttl: Saints could have scored ‘five or six’ against Burnley

Ralph Hasenhuttl was delighted as Southampton came out on top in their “six-pointer” against Burnley to move clearer of the bottom three.

The Saints were made to work for the points as they were 2-0 down by the half hour mark. They did finish the half the better of the two sides, though. Goals from Stuart Armstrong and Danny Ings brought them level before the break.

Hasenhuttl’s side forced Nick Pope into a couple of great saves before Nathan Redmond put them ahead with around 25 minutes to go.

OPINION: Haaland a no-go? Danny Ings is a no-brainer

They held on to pick up just their second win from their last thirteen Premier League outings. The Saints now have 36 points and they are up to 13th in the table.

As cited by BBC Sport, Hasenhuttl told reporters that his side’s decision-making was fantastic against Burnley:

Hasenhuttl: “A difficult start for us, and normally an opponent that is not helpful if you go two down I’m very happy to see things we were working on over the last two weeks – our decision-making in the final third was fantastic.

“We could have scored five or six or more goals against a team that doesn’t normally give you many chances.

“It was a deserved win. We tried to keep the tempo very high and stretch them all the time and it worked. We have belief in what we are doing and I think you grab the chance when you get it.

“It was important to make the equaliser before half-time. Then you are in a better position mentally to keep on going. I don’t know a lot of teams who turned it around like we did, so it’s a massive boost.

“It was a six-pointer today. To turn the tables around is amazing for us and I think the guys did a good job today.”

After the game, Ings insisted that the Saints “thoroughly deserved” the victory:

“It was tough. As a team, in previous games when we’ve gone behind it’s been extremely tough to get back into it. The lads dug deep. At the end of the day we thoroughly deserved it.

“It was a nice goal. I was pressing Ben Mee, he was caught off balance and I managed to steal the ball and have the composure to put it through Pope’s legs. Every player wants to play every week and this season’s been interrupted for a lot of people, but to be back out there today, I enjoyed it.

“It’s a massive win. We understood that our form hasn’t been good enough. To put it right today was huge but we have to carry on and keep going.”
