Erling Haaland has explained himself after he screamed in the Sevilla goalkeeper’s face after his second goal in the 2-2 draw with Sevilla on Tuesday.
The Norwegian became the quickest player to reach 20 Champions League goals, in just 14 games, breaking Harry Kane’s previous record of 24.
His second of the night came at the end of a bonkers seven-minute spell which saw a Haaland goal disallowed, VAR award a penalty from a previous phase of play, his first penalty being saved before he converted the second after Yassine Bounou was adjudged to have come off his line to save the initial attempt.
Early winner: the inevitable, absurd Erling Braut Haaland
Haaland did not take kindly to Bounou’s celebrations after he had saved his first effort, ran up to the Moroccan keeper and screamed in his face before wheeling away in celebration.
The Sevilla players were not impressed and Haaland was booked for his outburst.
In explanation, Haaland said: “I missed and then he cheated. Then I took it again and scored when he didn’t cheat. When he was screaming in my face after the first one, I was thinking ‘it will be even better to score another goal’ – and that’s what happened, so it was nice.”
When asked what it was that he said to Bono, he added: “I don’t want to say. I don’t know what it means but I said what he said after I missed the first one. Maybe it’s karma in this world.”
