Guardiola: Man City winning run is ‘more than remarkable’

Pep Guardiola has insisted that Man City played “really well” as they beat Wolves 4-1 to extend their winning run to 21 games in all competitions.

Man City were in control in the first half and they deservedly took the lead in the 15th-minute. Riyad Mahrez’s low cross was set to reach for Raheem Sterling but Leander Dendoncker knocked it home for an unfortunate own-goal.

Their dominance continued in the second half. But Wolves grabbed an equaliser against the run of play in the 61st-minute.

Joao Moutinho dinked the ball into the area from a free-kick and Conor Coady was there to head home past Ederson. Wolves enjoyed a good spell after their goal, but the hosts were soon back into the ascendency.

The visitors were level for 19 minutes before Gabriel Jesus put City back in front. Kyle Walker advanced down the right flank before he squared it towards the six-yard box. Dendoncker touched it back but Jesus was there to smash it in from a few yards out.

Mahrez grabbed a deserved goal of his own in the 90th-minute. Sterling was intercepted in possession but the ball fell to the Algerian international on the edge and he found the bottom corner with a smart finish.

City were not done there as Jesus got his second with a few seconds to spare. This is their 21st straight win in all competitions and they are now 15 points clear at the top of the league.

Speaking to BBC Sport post-match, Guardiola was pleased that his side got past a “dangerous” Wolves side:

“We were little bit anxious after 1-1 but we reacted really well after we scored the goals.

“It was well deserved – we played really good. The games are tight and in the last minutes we win the game comfortably.

“After 1-1, they were dangerous but we continued to take the ball and we didn’t give up and that’s a good lesson for us the little details.

“When you see the performance we were really good. I felt this morning that we were together and we were ready to try again.

“It’s a short calendar this season. We didn’t have one long week – there are so many games and playing Wolves with their physicality and mentality; I’m more than pleased with what we’ve done so far and we can enjoy tonight, rest and prepare for the next one.

Guardiola on their winning record: “The record we will talk about in the future. In Winter time – November, December, January in England, it is hell! It’s more than remarkable. I’m more than proud but at the same time, Liverpool are the champions. To win the Premier League we need those points.”
