Guardiola denies City are in ‘bad moment’ after derby defeat

Pep Guardiola has insisted that he and his team will not feel “depressed” following their Manchester derby defeat as their focus now turns to Southampton.

Man City’s 28-game unbeaten run in all competitions was ended by arch-rivals Man United on Sunday. The league leaders had also won 21 consecutive games before the weekend.

This scintillating form has put them in a strong position in all four competitions. But Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw scored to earn United a 2-0 win at the Etihad.

This defeat leaves City eleven points clear of Man United with ten games to go. Guardiola’s side host Southampton at the Etihad on Wednesday.

Guardiola told BBC Sport ahead of that game that the derby loss has been “forgotten” by his players:

“Even when we win, it’s forgotten. When we lose, it’s the same.

“We are not going to be depressed – it’s football. You can lose games. The not normal thing is what we have done [the record winning run].

“It’s not a bad moment. A bad moment is playing bad and not getting results in a lot of games.

“We are close – every team is fighting for something. We are seeing how tough the games are. Tomorrow will not be an exception.”

Guardiola has also insisted that Man United can win the title this season.

He added: “When the option is open, everything can happen in football. United can do it, absolutely I agree. We have 10 games left and we have to win six or seven to do it mathematically.

“There is still a lot of work to do to arrive in the last games in contention to win the Premier League. We are alive in all competitions. It doesn’t matter what happens tomorrow – of course, we want to win – but there are still many games.”
