Guardiola claims this Man City team is his ‘worst’

Pep Guardiola has suggested that this current Manchester City team still has a lot to “prove” before the end of the season.

Guardiola agreed to become the new Man City boss in February 2016 to take over from Manuel Pellegrini. City made a perfect start to the 2016/17 Premier League season, as they sat top of the table after ten games.

But a decline in form saw them drop down the table as they eventually finished third. The 50-year-old’s second year in charge was a historic one for the former champions.

City won the EFL Cup and they were dominant in the Premier League. They only lost twice all season as they reached 100 points and they scored 106 league goals in the process. This placed them 19 points clear of second-placed Manchester United.

In the 2018/19 term, there was an enthralling two-horse race for the title between City and Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp’s side were ahead for much of the campaign, but they were pipped in the end by Guardiola’s men.

City finished on 98 points to win back to back titles and Liverpool were a point behind them. They completed the treble that year as they also won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

The last campaign was a quieter one for Guardiola’s standards at Man City. It was Liverpool’s turn to dominate the division as they finished 18 points clear of City to win the Premier League.

They did pick up some silverware though. City won the Carabao Cup for the third consecutive season.

Guardiola’s men stuttered at the start of the 2020/21 term, but a 28-game unbeaten run has seen them run clear at the top of the league. They are also in the Carabao Cup final and they are among the favourites to win the FA Cup and Champions League.

Speaking during a recent press conference, as cited by The Mirror, Guardiola said that this team has not “won anything” yet:

“Right now it is worst that the previous ones because they won a lot and this team this year hasn’t won anything.

“We are evaluated by the results, for the success, for the titles we can lift – especially from outside.

“The previous Man City won and this team still has to prove it.”
