Forest Green Rovers vs Morecambe is hardly a fixture of two footballing heavyweights. It did however give us one of the greatest goals in FA Cup history.
The name of Wayne Hatswell became well-known for all the wrong reasons after the two sides played each other in the First Round of the FA Cup in the 2000/01 season.
The Forest Green defender scored an own goal that was played around the world and featured in many football DVDs.
A Morecambe striker managed to out-muscle a Forest Green defender to the left of the goal and just outside the six yard box. He managed to prod the ball across goal but (the Forest Green goalkeeper) got down well to push the ball away.
Wayne Hatswell was standing nearby and the ball rebounded off the defender’s knee before rolling slowly towards the goal.
He chased after the ball, looked up and hammered the ball as hard as he could to clear the ball from danger. Sadly for Hatswell, his clearance flew into the top corner of the net!
To compound the misery for the Forest Green Rovers that day, Morecambe beat them 3-0 and went through to the Second Round.
