Souness: Only ‘two things will stop’ Jones becoming a Liverpool star

Graeme Souness says that only serious injury and “a big head” can stop Curtis Jones becoming a top player for Liverpool.

Jones scored the opening goal as Liverpool cruised past Sheffield United on Sunday evening, with Roberto Firmino’s shot getting a huge deflection off Kean Bryan for the second goal.

The 20-year-old made one start in the Premier League last campaign but he has played a bigger role this term with 11 starts in the league already.

And Souness has tipped Jones to be a Liverpool star for years to come after his goal helped the Reds to close the gap on the top four.

“If you have played the game, then you’ll realise that this boy is full of technique, he can run with the ball, he can dribble with the ball, he takes the ball in the tight areas and he puts a shift in,” Souness told Sky Sports.

“At 20-years-old, he has a chance to be a real player for this club. “He’s extremely gifted, the fact that he’s a Scouser is a real bonus for the club because they know the passion he’ll have for the club.

“And as he gets older and becomes an influence in the dressing room, that will spread to newcomers coming into the club.

“He could have a big part to play in Liverpool ’s future, given he’s only 20 and he looks at home at this level.

“He’s got the ability, the athleticism, he looks to have the attitude and he’s one of several English midfielders that have a real chance of being proper players in the Premier League as long as they don’t get a big head on their shoulders.

“You hear of midfielders that describe themselves in the modern game as a defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder, if you’re a midfielder, you should be built to do a bit of everything.

“You should be able to score goals, and this guy, because of his technique, and you see when he gets into tight areas he can take it and he’ll get out of tight areas when he’s surrounded by people, he’s got wonderful technique.

“Two things that will stop him becoming a proper player going forward: a big head, which I don’t think at Liverpool that will be allowed, or he gets an injury – God forbid.”
