Hoddle urges Man Utd to sign ‘young Cavani’ in striker search

Pundit Glenn Hoddle has urged Man Utd to sign a ‘young Edinson Cavani’ during their search for a striker.

Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to be on the lookout for a world-class talisman up front.

Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is thought to be their top priority, although a bid is yet to materialise.

Speaking about their transfer dealings, Hoddle said (via Express): “Yeah [a striker] would be the [priority]. I think it’s got to be. You need a young Cavani.

“You’ve got Cavani at the wrong time. Five or six years ago, his movement, his hold-up play, everything he had and he’s got still.

“When he plays for United I see a different United team, even now at his age. And he’s not that old, what is he, 33?

“So Haaland would be the one but how are you going to get him? Have the days gone where if United were in for you, ‘oh I’m going to Man United’? It was Real Madrid or Man United.

“Those days unfortunately for United have gone, they’ve got to build that up again.

“But Haaland would be on everyone’s lips, everyone would want him.”

Haaland has been linked with pretty much all of Europe’s top clubs, including Real and Juventus.

Man Utd are hoping to win the race for his signature using the relationship with Solskjaer.

The pair are compatriots and Solskjaer recently revealed that they are in regular contact.

Haaland has been a scoring sensation since joining Dortmund in January 2020.

He’s bagged an incredible 47 goals in 48 appearances in all competitions.

The striker is a big game player, too. Earlier this month, he became the quickest player to reach 20 Champions League goals with two against Sevilla.

That saw him beat goalscoring legends such as Alessandro Del Piero and Ruud van Nistelrooy. It’s even more impressive when you consider he only took 14 games to reach that landmark.

Man Utd might be forced into a big money move for Haaland if they lose Cavani this summer.

Cavani has been linked with a return to South America. His father has spoken about his desire to move closer to his family.
