Neville doubts Man Utd shake-up will impact the first team

Gary Neville doubts the appointment of Darren Fletcher as technical director and John Murtough as football director will have an impact on the Man Utd first team.

The appointments are designed to “further strengthen the club’s football operations” following years of speculation over the potential arrival of a director of football.

Murtough was promoted to the role of football director from head of football development after being at the club for over seven years.

And Neville doubts Man Utd fans will see a major impact on the first team because of the two appointments with the “same people” making the key decisions.

“I think the appointments of John Murtough and Darren Fletcher are internal appointments really, John Murtough has been at the club for eight seasons,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Darren Fletcher has obviously known the club for a long time. It’s quite clear that the direction of the club is to go down the path of people who know and understand the DNA of the club.

“Nicky Butt, Michael Carrick, Mike Phelan, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer…there’s five or six players that have lived through the Sir Alex Ferguson era, that know what it means.

“In terms of the appointment of John Murtough as football director, I don’t see that as being a critical appointment in the sense of Manchester United winning or not winning the league in the next three or four years.

“When you look at the job description, I don’t think he has the veto to sack the manager or appoint a manager, sign a player or get rid of a player. I think that will still come down to the same people as before.”

Following the appointment on Wednesday, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: “These are hugely important appointments that reinforce the progress we have been making as a club in recent years in our relentless pursuit of success.

“We have already made great strides forward in the way we run our football operations, and the benefits are visible in the resurgent pipeline of academy talent reaching the first team and through our improved recruitment record.

“John has been integral to our progress in these areas and his deep understanding of development ensures the club’s traditions of bringing young players through from academy to first team will continue.

“This new position is a natural evolution that harnesses his leadership qualities and his years of experience in the game.

“Darren’s stellar achievements as a player and his own journey from academy to Premier League and Champions League winner means he naturally commands respect and understands this vital part of the club’s DNA.

“In this new role, the first in our history, he will deliver technical advice across all aspects of the football department as well as contributing to the communication and delivery of our football philosophy across all areas of the club.

“I am delighted that John and Darren have accepted these roles and I look forward to the contribution they will make, together with Ole and the rest of the staff, as we build toward future success.”
