Former Leicester captain Colin Appleton passes away aged 85

Colin Appleton, who captained Leicester City during their chase for a cup double in the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 85.

Appleton, who skippered the side to their 1964 League Cup win against Stoke, made 333 appearances in all competitions for the Foxes during eight years before spells with Charlton, Barrow and hometown club Scarborough.

Leicester said on their official website: “It is with great sadness that we heard the news that Colin Appleton, the captain of Leicester City’s famous ‘Ice Kings’ team, which was a realistic contender for the league and cup double in 1963, died on 31 May, 2021 at the age of 85.

“Colin’s career at Leicester City was one of great distinction and our thoughts are with Colin’s family and friends at this sad time.”

Appleton was a member of the Leicester side which won the old Second Division title in 1957 and appeared in the 1961 FA Cup final against Tottenham, as well as managing teams including Hull, Swansea and Exeter after his playing career finished.

He was the Foxes’ captain in the 1963 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United and led them to successive League Cup finals in 1964 and 1965, losing the latter to Chelsea.
