This week’s ‘Greatest Goal’ comes from Leeds United’s Rod Wallace in the second Premier League season. It won the Match of the Day ‘Goal of the Season’ award and was a fine solo goal.
Wallace received the ball just over 30 yards from his own goal and began running at pace towards the Tottenham goal. Steve Sedgley was right behind Wallace and put him under enough pressure to force him wide towards the left touchline.
Spurs’ right back Dean Austin blocked Wallace’s path forward but the Leeds striker found a gap between Austin and Sedgley and ran through it. He skipped over Austin’s left leg and then past Teddy Sheringham who slid in to try and dispossess him.
Wallace suddenly had some space to exploit out on the left wing and he carried his run towards goal. Tottenham’s Gary Mabbutt and Kevin Scott stood just inside the box to cover and with a beautiful curling shot, Wallace placed the ball around goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt and into the far corner of the net. It was an exceptional goal.
