Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Rio Ferdinand were unanimous in their praise of Mason Greenwood on Sunday as Man Utd came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1.
The Seagulls took the lead through Danny Welbeck in the first half but second-half strikes from Marcus Rashford and Greenwood saw the Red Devils turn the match on its head.
Another comeback victory means second-placed Man Utd are now four points ahead of Leicester City in third and more importantly 11 points off fifth-placed Tottenham, with a place in the Champions League next season looking more and more likely.
OPINION: We are once again asking are Manchester United actually good or what?
Greenwood’s role could be increased in the coming weeks with Rashford limping off with a foot issue on Sunday and Anthony Martial potentially ruled out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury.
And Solskjaer was full of praise for the England international but has now demanded that he does it week in week out.
Solskjaer said: “Mason was mature. Today he was one of our brightest players. He was clean, he was tidy and he got the goal.
“It’s a header inside the six-yard box and that’s what we need more from Mason. ‘It’s always difficult to play Brighton. We have had good results and we’ve had to earn them the hard way. We managed to find a way in the second half.”
And Ferdinand was also keen to praise the youngster and hailed the “unbelievable runs” he makes for his Man Utd team-mates.
Ferdinand told BT Sport: “They struggled in the first half but they improved and got the job done. It wasn’t perfect but they got the win.
“The goal from Greenwood, that’s a striker’s instinct, this kid is a striker. What I was pleased about with Greenwood was his all-round game. His movement and the way he retained possession was great.
“He’s making unbelievable runs. He needs to keep making those runs because his team-mates will find him eventually. For someone so young to be doing that when he’s not in a rich vein of form in terms of goals tells me a lot about him. He’s got the right attitude.”
