Ferdinand questions Ole after ‘bad weekend’ for Man United

Rio Ferdinand has questioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision to rest players for Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final against Leicester City.

The Red Devils were knocked out of the FA Cup at the hands of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester at the weekend.

Mason Greenwood scored for the visitors to cancel out Kelechi Iheanacho’s early goal, but second half efforts from Youri Tielemans and Iheanacho secured the Foxes a well-deserved 3-1 win.

Solskjaer made a few changes for the cup tie. The most notable of these saw him name Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw on the bench. Both have shone for United this season and they have arguably been their two best players.

Their exit from the FA Cup means that the only trophy still up for grabs for Man United is the Europa League. They beat AC Milan 2-1 on aggregate in the round of 16 of the competition.

United have been drawn to face Spanish side Granada in the last eight. If they advance, they will play either Ajax or Roma in the semi-finals.

Ferdinand – who used to play with Solskjaer – told Vibe with Five, as cited by Manchester Evening News, that “questions will be asked” of his former teammate after the defeat to Leicester:

“It was a bad weekend, I have to be honest.

“Manchester United were done, Leicester were the better team. Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) hit the nail on the head, there was no spark in the team. Questions will get asked.

“Should he have rested, with an international break coming, should they have played them and then let them rest this week coming?

“It shows you how much we rely on Bruno Fernandes, massively, and we didn’t perform.

“We looked leggy and they looked like a team with the bit between their teeth.

“You see the draw come out, you see Southampton in the semi-final. No disrespect but when you’re a dominant team and you see that, you think ‘we can destroy this team, it’s all on us’.

“To get that at a semi-final at Wembley, to get to the final, we missed a fantastic opportunity.”
