Ferdinand likens ‘smooth’ Chelsea man to ex-Man Utd team-mate

Rio Ferdinand thinks Chelsea playmaker Kai Havertz has a “lazy swagger” which reminds him of ex-Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov.

The Germany international arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen for big money and had been struggling to live up to big expectations.

However, recent performances have been much better and Havertz produced a wonderful display as the Blues breezed past Real Madrid in the semi-final of the Champions League on Wednesday night.

OPINION: Chelsea fitter, faster, stronger and just far better than weary Madrid

He was unlucky not to score as a wonderful chip over the goalkeeper came back off the cross bar for Timo Werner to head in the opener.

And Ferdinand has likened “smooth” Havertz’s game to that of his former Man Utd team-mate Berbatov.

Ferdinand said on BT Sport: “He [Havertz] reminds me of Berbatov, a player I played with at Manchester United. He’s got that lazy swagger at times and that nonchalance about him.

“The guy is just so smooth man. The game doesn’t quicken up around him. The game slows down to his pace, he gets things done. I think he will grow into a really important player for Chelsea.”

Fellow pundit Michael Owen was also full of praise for Havertz, he added: “I like Havertz. Some people hit the ground running when they come to the Premier League, he’s needed a bit of time but he’s a great asset.

“Not many players can do what he does. He’s going to be very good for this football club, I just think he needs time.”

On Chelsea’s performance against Real Madrid, Ferdinand added: “They could have won this game by five or six goals. They were fantastic.

“They play quick and are brutal in those transitions. They’re finishing wasn’t great on the night but they got the job done. Real Madrid looked tired tonight, they looked like an old team. Chelsea did it with some authority. They were the stronger, better team all over the park.

“This is a strong group with character. They will be a problem for Manchester City in the final. I can’t wait.”
