Ollie Watkins scored on his England debut against San Marino, becoming the 13th player to bag in his first appearance for the Three Lions since 2000.

He joins some illustrious company. Plus Steven Caulker, Kieran Richardson and Dave Nugent.

Darius Vassell
The then-Aston Villa striker made his debut on the same night in 2002 as Wayne Bridge and Bolton goal machine Michael Ricketts. But it was Vassell who made Edwin van der Sar’s life flash before his eyes with a bicycle kick from a David Beckham cross to equalise in a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam

Francis Jeffers
Jeffers’ debut was overshadowed somewhat by Wayne Rooney’s first senior cap and Sven Goran-Eriksson changing his entire XI while going down to Australia at Upton Park.

Rooney played another 119 times, but that was it for Jeffers. At least he made the most of his solitary cap with a debut goal, albeit a consolation.

 

Shaun Wright-Phillips
Wright-Phillips ended his career with 36 England caps and six goals, which is more of a surprise now than it might have been after a special solo goal on his debut in a 3-0 win over Ukraine at St James’ Park.

Kieran Richardson
The summer of 2005 truly were the glory days for Richardson. After being carried from The Hawthorns pitch after helping West Brom pull off the great escape, the on-loan Man Utd winger then went on tour to USA with England and bagged a brace on his debut against their hosts.

It was the kind of experience that would make you believe there was a God. “I just want to praise Jesus Christ and go to heaven. That’s all I care about” he said two years later while he slipped down the football ladder. Richardson was last seen on trial – an unsuccessful one – with Granada in 2017.

 

David Nugent
Fair play to big Dave. You absolutely would…

“I could see it rolling in but I’m thinking ‘I’m going to get this, I’m not leaving it!’ Obviously I ran in, scored, basically from not even a yard, it’s on the line. One cap, one goal, that’ll do me.”

 

Steven Caulker
Caulker there, showing the kind of predatory instincts that made Jurgen Klopp play him as a striker for Liverpool.

Sadly for the one-cap centre-back, Zlatan somewhat stole his thunder that night in Stockholm with four goals of his own and THAT ridiculous bicycle-kick…

Andros Townsend
The Palace winger was a useful player for Roy Hodgson, scoring three goals in 13 appearances, in the process forcing Paul Merson to gorge on humble pie.

 

Rickie Lambert
You’d have to be Scottish or a Pompey fan not to have enjoyed the Southampton striker’s debut goal, a winner which came with his first touch, 163 seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Then all we heard about for a month was that Lambert once worked in a beetroot factory…

 

Harry Kane
Kane was even quicker off the mark, netting 73 seconds after leaving Hodgson’s bench to score the all-important fourth in a 4-0 win over Lithuania.

Callum Wilson
Watkins’ debut goal most likely bumped Wilson even further down the pecking order. Still, the Newcastle striker, then of Bournemouth, can reflect in his old age about scoring on his England debut in the Wayne Rooney Foundation International…

The Everton striker was on fire when he was handed his England debut, so it was no surprise when he headed in a cross from Jack Grealish, who stole the headlines somewhat with a man-of-the-match performance on his first England start.
