Capello blasts Ronaldo for ‘unforgivable’ Juventus error

Fabio Capello criticised Cristiano Ronaldo and other Juventus players for an “unforgivable error” as they crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Porto.

Juventus won the second leg 3-2 after extra-time but it wasn’t enough as Porto won on the away goals rule as the tie ended 4-4 on aggregate.

Sergio Oliveira’s free-kick, his second goal of the night, proved to be the difference as it beat a poor Juventus wall and squeezed past Wojciech Szczesny to put Porto ahead with seven minutes of extra time remaining.

The hosts went straight up the other end to restore their lead on the night through Adrien Rabiot but Porto held firm in the closing stages to seal a memorable win.

There was criticism of Ronaldo and Rabiot especially for turning their backs and jumping over the ball as Oliveira’s free-kick went under them and into the net.

“That was an unforgivable error,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.

“In my day, you chose the players who went into the wall and they couldn’t be someone afraid of the ball.

“They were scared of the ball and jumped away from it, turning their backs. That’s unforgivable. You see only the youngest players actually stepped in and showed their face during the tough moments.

“In this team, there are some veterans who turn up when they win to take the credit, then are nowhere to be seen when they lose.”
