Ex-Spurs man reflects on ‘hardest season’ of his career

Christian Eriksen has admitted that his lack of game time for Inter Milan has been “annoying” since he moved there from Tottenham last season.

Eriksen joined Spurs in 2013 for around £11m from Ajax. His move to the Premier League proved to be an immense success.

The midfielder totted up over 300 appearances for the Londoners from his seven years at the club. He grabbed 69 goals and 89 assists for them in that time.

Eriksen was named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2017/18 and he was a two-time winner of Tottenham’s Player of the Year award.

His time at Spurs came to an end last year as he joined Inter Milan in January. He only made eight starts in Serie A before the end of last season, as he got a goal and two assists for his new club.

Eriksen has struggled for game time this season as well. He has only started 12 games across all competitions. His best moment in an Inter Milan shirt has come during this year’s Coppa Italia.

The Danish international came off the bench to score a 97th-minute free-kick against AC Milan to earn his side a 2-1 win.

Eriksen told TV2 Sport that his time at Inter Milan has been “mentally difficult” at times:

“It was the hardest and most demanding season of my career.

“It was like going up and down continuously, but now I feel like I have recovered well.

“Not because I wanted to escape, I really wanted to fight for my place and I always have. I was sure that if my chance came, I would probably try to grab it.

“It was mentally difficult. I came to Inter to play football and, when you aren’t allowed to do it, it’s annoying.

“Off the pitch it was absolutely fantastic. Milan is a beautiful city and the family is fine. It was only on the pitch that something was missing.

“Being an Inter player has always been nice, but the best moment is being able to play more. I’m having a great time, I was good at isolating myself and concentrating.

“For an incredible number of days, after training and games, I trained more. A free kick, a shot on target, I had the opportunity to train more because I didn’t play much.”
