Euro 2020: Musiala in as Low names Germany squad

Germany manager Joachim Low has announced his Germany squad for the Euro’s and has included former England youth international Jamal Musiala, alongside seven other Bayern Munich players.

Musiala represented England at four different youth levels, including the under-21s in 2020, but in February of this year decided that he would represent his birth nation of Germany for full international matches.

The 18-year-old made his Germany debut in March, coming on as a 79th minute substitute against Iceland.

Speaking to The Athletic in February, Musiala said: “In the end, I just listened to the feeling that over a long period of time kept telling me that it was the right decision to play for Germany, the land I was born in. Still, it wasn’t an easy decision for me.

“I have a heart for Germany and a heart for England. Both hearts will keep on beating.

“It is difficult to find words for what England means for me because I have so many memories connected to very positive emotions.”

Elsewhere in the squad, Low has recalled 2014 World Cup winner Thomas Muller, who has not featured for Germany since 2018.

Muller has had a stellar campaign for Bayern, netting 11 times and assisting an astonishing 21 goals in the Bundesliga so far this season.

Speaking to the Bayern website, the 31-year-old said: “I’m happy to be part of the national team again.

“In the amicable and open phone calls I had with Joachim Löw before the call-up, we discussed what we expect from each other in the coming weeks.

“The sporting challenge of representing the German colours again with the boys at a tournament, and the chance to claim the Euro title that comes with it, appeals to me a lot.”

Manuel Neuer, Niklas Sule, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka are the other Bayern players included alongside Musiala and Muller.

Germany have been dealt the toughest group of the tournament, facing off against France, Portugal and Hungary, but luckily for the German’s they will play all three group matches at Munich’s Allianz Arena.

Their opening match will be against world champions France, who have called up Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema for the first time since 2015.

With Low stepping down from his role as manager after the tournament, he will be hoping to sign off in style by lifting the trophy at Wembley on July 11.
