Egypt eager for Salah to play at the Olympics, says coach

Egypt coach Shawky Gharib has insisted that they hope to include Mo Salah in their squad for this summer’s Olympics in Tokyo.

Salah joined Chelsea in 2013, but this spell proved to be unsuccessful for the forward. He only scored two times from 19 games for the Blues.

After a successful loan spell, he joined Roma on a permanent basis in 2016. During his time there, he netted 29 times from 65 outings in Serie A.

He returned to the Premier League in June 2019 as he signed for Liverpool for a fee believed to be around £43m.

The attacker has been superb since his move to Anfield. In this time, he has established himself as one of the most prolific forwards in world football.

Salah has netted 119 times from 191 outings for the Reds. This included 90 from just 135 games in the Premier League.

In recent seasons, Salah has been pivotal as Liverpool have won the Premier League and Champions League.

Salah broke into Eqypt’s senior national team in 2011 and since then he has comfortably been their best player. He has 43 goals from his 68 caps for Egypt so far.

Despite struggling for fitness, Salah played a part at the 2018 World Cup and he scored twice in the group stages.

The next big tournament for Egypt is this summer’s Olympics in Tokyo. The 16 team men’s football tournament is due to run from 22 July until 7 August.

Gharib told AFP, as cited by France24, that Salah would make a “huge difference” for Egypt at the tournament:

“I have made it public that I’d like to have him on board in our Olympic campaign and he hasn’t refused, which means he also wants to play with us.

“Salah’s participation in the Olympics is endorsed by the state, represented by the Sports Ministry and the Egyptian Football Association, in our concerted effort to garner an Olympic medal in football for the first time.

“Salah, as one of the three best players internationally, will lift the Pharoahs to a whole new level in the Olympics.

“His presence with us will make a huge difference.”
