De Bruyne out of hospital with broken nose and eye socket

Kevin De Bruyne is out of hospital after suffering a fractured nose and eye socket during Manchester City’s Champions League final defeat to Chelsea.

The 29-year-old playmaker had to be replaced by Gabriel Jesus in the 60th minute on Saturday evening following a collision with Blues centre-back Antonio Rudiger.

De Bruyne left the field in tears in Porto and has provided an update on his injury.

“Hi guys just got back from the hospital,” the Belgium international posted on Twitter on Sunday morning.

“My diagnosis is Acute nose bone fracture and left orbital fracture. I feel okay now. Still disappointed about yesterday obviously but we will be back.”

Manchester City were well off the pace in a 1-0 defeat to Thomas Tuchel’s side, with manager Pep Guardiola coming in for criticism over his decision not to start a holding midfielder.

With Rodri and Fernandinho both left out of the starting XI, N’Golo Kante was able to dominate the midfield and Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has hailed him as the world’s best in that position.

Asked if he could name a better midfielder in the world than Kante, Azpilicueta replied: “A straightforward answer to that question – no.

“He does everything, he brings so much energy.

“The way he drives the ball forward, he covers so much ground.

“For him as well after winning the World Cup, winning the Champions League, he’s so humble as a person, and I’m just so happy for him.

“He’s a massive part of this team so I’m so happy to have him next to me.”

Guardiola defended his controversial team selection after City’s failure to lift a first continental crown.

He said: “I did my best in the selection. I made the best selection to win the game, the players know it.

“I think Gundogan played well. We missed a little in the first half to break the lines, but in the second half it was much better. It was a tight game but we had enormous chances.

“I would like to say it was an exceptional, exceptional season for us. It is a big dream being here, but unfortunately we couldn’t win. We tried, we could not do it, and we will work to come back one day.”
