Argentina will once again enter a title match with the need to win, and if they can accomplish that, they will exorcize some of the ghosts that have chased La Albiceleste since they claimed the 1993 Copa América title against Mexico.
La Albiceleste has lost seven title games since that game against El Tri. Denmark, Brazil (three times), Chile (two times), and Germany have been the teams that have gotten between them and a new title, and that is precisely what we want to discuss in this article.
If your math skills are in shape, then you must have realized that La Albiceleste have gone 28 years without lifting a major title. Players such as Diego Maradona, Gabriel Batistuta, Juan Román Riquelme, Carlos Tévez, and more have come and gone, and the South Americans have failed to add one more cup to their trophy cabinet. If they win this Saturday, then that stat will be erased for good.
The other “demon” Argentina will have to take care of if they want to win the title has to do with something that Lionel Messi dominates but has forgotten how to do when he playes title games with Argentina: scoring goals. Since the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup, Argentina have only been able to score once in five title matches. In order to win the title, Messi and Co. will have to figure out the way to find the back of the net after three Copa América finals and the FIFA World Cup title clash vs Germany going blank.
Argentina have the golden chance to beat Brazil at their very own Maracaná Stadium, and if they can manage to do that, they will also end a five-game streak without a win against Brazil whenever playing a competitive game in that country. So, as you may have noticed, Argentina will have to face Brazil and their own ghosts if they want to beat the odds and win one more title.
