Cole: £24m Brewster must ‘step up’ for Sheffield United

Joe Cole has insisted that former Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster “owes” it to Chris Wilder to perform for Sheffield United.

The striker joined Liverpool in 2015 from Chelsea and he was highly thought of throughout his time at Anfield.

Brewster had his first spell away from the club last season as he joined Swansea City on loan. The forward shone for the Swans as they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League. He scored 11 times from 22 games in all competitions.

With him hoping to play regular football, he agreed to move to Sheffield United last summer. The Blades spent around £24m to sign him from Liverpool. The Reds have a £40m buy-back option for Brewster that expires in 2023.

Like Sheffield United, Brewster has struggled this season. He is yet to score from his 21 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 20-year-old started as Wilder’s side picked up their fourth win of the season against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

Cole told BT Sport on Wednesday night that Brewster needs to show more “maturity” for the Blades:

“There is a lot of it (ability). Now, it’s maturity. He needs to step up. He owes the manager. They bought him for big money.

“It might not be the right time. But get him playing, get his confidence up and build him up because he’s clearly a talented player and he owes the manager one.”
