Wilder set to take over at West Brom following Allardyce exit

Chris Wilder is reportedly on the verge of taking over from Sam Allardyce at West Brom.

The Englishman has been a free agent since his sacking by boyhood club Sheffield United in March.

He’s been widely linked with the Celtic job in recent weeks but now looks certain to make a switch to the West Midlands.

According to the Mirror, Wilder is West Brom’s first choice to replace Allardyce and will soon be announced as their new boss, barring any ‘late hiccups’.

Talks are ongoing between the two parties and are thought to be nearing a conclusion.

West Brom do have other options, including Frank Lampard and David Wagner, although they are currently focusing on getting Wilder’s deal to go through.

The Baggies view Wilder as the perfect man to take them back into the Premier League. They were relegated this season after picking up just 26 points from 38 games.

Wilder has great credentials to give them an immediate top flight return. He won promotions with Oxford and Northampton before receiving his dream role at Sheffield United in May 2016.

Two promotions in three seasons for the Yorkshire side saw them reach the Premier League for the first time in 13 years.

Wilder’s success didn’t end there. In their first season back, the Blades gained a top ten finish with some brilliant displays against England’s biggest teams.

A poor 2020/21 is seemingly the only negative on Wilder’s resume. He was sacked by Sheffield United owner Prince Abdullah with the club rock bottom of the Premier League table.

West Brom chiefs are said to be impressed by the manager’s no-nonsense style and history of successful campaigns.

They’re hoping he can make them Premier League regulars, as soon as they get themselves out of the Championship.

If Wilder is announced in the next few weeks, then he will be able to start sorting out arrivals and departures.

The Baggies have been linked with a permanent move for loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who will soon return to Arsenal.

They also have options to buy loanees Mbaye Diagne and Okay Yokuslu, so Wilder would need to sort out whether those deals go ahead.

Impressive shot-stopper Sam Johnstone, who recently made the provisional 33-man England squad for the Euros, has been linked with a move away from club.
