Chelsea ‘waiting for breakthrough’ on striker form, says Tuchel

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says the Blues are ‘waiting on a breakthrough’ for their strikers to hit form.

Timo Werner, Tammy Abraham and Kai Havertz have all struggled in front of goal this season.

Werner had the most obvious lapse of form after going 14 league matches without scoring.

OPINION: Wilder, Sheff Utd deserved more than brainless sacking

The German forward is having a poor season but looks like he will benefit from the appointment of Tuchel in the long run.

He’s scored five goals and assisted eight more in 28 league appearances so far.

Speaking about the situation, Tuchel said (via Goal): “It is not time to reflect for the summer and other solutions, other than what we have. We have guys that we are happy with and are looking for more solutions; we will try to help them.

“In general, I am happy because we don’t only look at the output in how they score and assist. Of course, this is a statistic in which every striker is attached to and everyone has to have the mentality to cope with the statistic. It is like this at high-level football.

“We are still waiting for a breakthrough for the guys to be on a run to score consistently, it is not the case. We will never stop pushing and looking for solutions to create even more clear chances for them. That’s the way it is.”

Abraham has had slightly more success than Werner this term, bagging six league goals.

Havertz was unlucky not to score in Chelsea’s recent games against Everton and Leeds.

The £72million German forward could be a huge success at Stamford Bridge if Tuchel can get the best out of him.

He’s been used as an attacking midfielder in the past, but Tuchel thinks his best position is further forward.

Speaking after the goalless draw with Leeds, the manager said: “He is pretty much a number nine because he likes to be high and not necessarily drop to 10 and turn. He loves to be high and arrive in the box.

“He loves to be there and have the last touch. This is for me why he played number nine today.”

One striker who usually has an impact is Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman has spent a lot of time on the bench this campaign but had a massive part to play in Chelsea’s Champions League win over Atletico Madrid last month.

He scored a great overhead kick to give the Blues the advantage in their round of 16 tie.

They host Atletico in the second leg on Wednesday at 20:00.
