Chelsea took ‘step forward’ with Spurs victory, says Tuchel

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel says his team has taken a ‘step forward’ by beating Spurs 1-0 away from home.

Jorginho scored the winning goal as the Blues beat a toothless Jose Mourinho side.

Tuchel’s men dominated from the start and spent most of the match in the opposition half.

They were soon given a great chance to score as Timo Werner was brought down by Eric Dier in the box.

Jorginho converted the penalty to give them a deserved lead.

Werner had the chance to make it two but was tackled by Serge Aurier just as he was set on pulling the trigger.

Speaking after the victory, Tuchel told BBC Sport: “Every experience we make is a step forward. The whole first half we totally controlled the game, very high up the pitch. Maybe we lost confidence in the second half because we lost possession. We never lost the belief or structure. If it is necessary to suffer, you have to suffer.

“A bit more killer instinct and aggression in the box, it would have been nice to decide [the match]. There were chances but we lacked a bit of determination. It was a big win in an away game and I am very happy.

“It is not only about tactics, about how we play and live it. They lived it 100% with full power and intensity. We never lost the belief, faith or courage to push high and for that you have to be brave. We were the winners in the end.”

The only negative for Chelsea was the injury to defender Thiago Silva. He was replaced by Andreas Christensen after pulling up with an apparent muscle injury.

Speaking about the player, Tuchel said: “I saw Thiago with a big strap around his muscle, but we have to wait. It’s worrying because it’s a muscle injury.”
