How Chelsea scooped £20m from one-goal Hazard season

Chelsea reportedly received an additional £20million last season from Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid.

Hazard notched 110 goals and 92 assists in seven glittering seasons at Stamford Bridge, before moving to Real Madrid for an initial fee of £89million.

But agreed within the deal were a number of performance-related add-ons, with the price rising as high as £150million.

And The Athletic claim Chelsea scooped an extra £20million last season, despite an injury-plagued campaign which kept Hazard out for Madrid for large parts of the season.

The Belgian started just 14 La Liga games, scoring once in all competitions; notching seven assists.

The report claims the £20million was paid due to Madrid winning the Spanish title and qualifying for this season’s Champions League.

And the Blues are set to receive another significant payment should Zinedine Zidane’s side win Europe’s showcase competition this season.

They will have to get past Chelsea in the two-legged semi final to do so, with the first-leg in Madrid on Tuesday.

Despite Hazard’s struggles with injury and form again this season, he is fit to start against Chelsea having come off the bench against Real Betis at the weekend.

The winger was only on the pitch for 13 minutes, but created more chances than any other player in that time.

And Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel appeared wary of the threat posed by Hazard in his pre-match press conference, saying: “Eden is a top-quality player.

“He was the key player here for many, many years in this club and this league – which is one of the hardest in the world and a tough one if you decide matches so consistently like Eden did for this club here.

“So I have the biggest respect for him. Of course we talk a lot because he’s a big player for this club and of course we have many people here in the staff who know him very well.

“And like I said, he was a key player for this club. Now he plays for Real Madrid and obviously he’s fit and he had a comeback in the last game for some minutes to be ready tomorrow.

“If he plays, I’m pretty sure he wants to make a point and wants to prove [something]. Let’s see.”
