Wenger analyses Chelsea change under Tuchel post Lampard

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has explained the difference between Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel and Frank Lampard

Lampard was sacked after a run of five defeats in eight Premier League games to be replaced by Tuchel.

And in the German’s first 22 games in charge, he’s overseen 14 wins and just two defeats, with his side keeping 16 clean sheets.

He has secured Chelsea a place in the FA Cup final and they are now within 90 minutes of reaching the Champions League final after an impressive 1-1 draw away to Real Madrid.

And Wenger claims the key difference under Tuchel is the “cohesion” of the team.

“It is a team that has been submitted to many changes and when you change more than three players it takes you more time to create a cohesion and it is very difficult to imagine how the team would have progressed under Frank Lampard,” Wenger told beIN Sports.

“The only thing you can say is that Tuchel has done a good job by having created a good cohesion, a good belief and stimulated the hunger of the team.

“They look confident at the moment and I think you have to give him credit for that.”

Christian Pulisic netted Chelsea’s crucial away goal on Tuesday, but Wenger claims Madrid could benefit from the clarity of their task despite the Blues’ advantage.

“What is interesting in the Champions League is that you always have in the second game a psychological problem to sort out,” Wenger added.

“If you’re the manager of Chelsea now you go home tonight and you have to convince your players to adopt a strategy in the second game.

“So I say, will you try to get 0-0 or will you try to win the game.”

Asked what he would do if he were Chelsea manager, Wenger replied: “I would try to win the game.

“Because Madrid is in a different situation psychologically. They go to Chelsea and even if they score a goal it doesn’t change too much, they just play.

“You are always be in trouble when the way to behave is not clear. Because the lack of clarity gets the players in between two [mindsets].

“For Madrid they have one advantage – they are clear, they know what to do for the second leg.”
