Carragher slates Neville over Alexander-Arnold England call

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have been involved in a heated discussion over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England status ahead of the Euros.

It is currently up in the air whether Alexander-Arnold will be called up by Gareth Southgate this summer for the European Championships.

After being a mainstay for the Three Lions in recent years, he was left out of their most recent squad for their World Cup qualifiers.

Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Tripper were included in the squad ahead of the Liverpool defender.

Alexander-Arnold responded to his omission at the weekend. He shone for Jurgen Klopp’s side against Arsenal as he helped them to a comfortable 3-0 victory.

The exchange, which has been cited by The Mirror, was started by Dave Jones asking Neville if Southgate will include the right-back this summer:

“So I’m saying to myself. A one-off game, in a tournament, in a quarter or semi final, I ask who England are going to be playing? They’re going to be playing Germany, France, Portugal,” Neville said.

“Who’s he going to be playing against? Hazard, Mbappe, Sane, Jota, Ronaldo. Who do they want to play against? [Reece] James, [Kyle] Walker or Trent? They’ll say, I’ll let Trent go forward, he’ll leave space behind.”

Carragher then asked: “You’re making the case for him not going, would you not take him?”

“Hang on, you’ve just made the biggest case for why he wouldn’t go and why Gareth Southgate is not picking him.

“I’m asking you, not Gareth Southgate, what would you do?”

Neville responded: “I’ve been asked a different question, give me a break.

“I think the reason he won’t take him is because he’s there to win a tournament and I think he’ll trust Walker, or Trippier in a back three or wing back. Maybe James because he has more power to handle an Mbappe or a Ronaldo, and I don’t think he will take him.”

“If you have picked Kieran Trippier over Trent Alexander-Arnold that is embarrassing.” Carragher scoffed.

Neville finished by saying: “Relax. He’s in my squad.”
